Cervical bleeding

Hi,

Bit of background; I had CIN3 20 years ago and treated with LLETZ. Normal smears ever since. Last few months I have had heavier periods, bleeding between periods and heavier, sometimes blood stained discharge. I do have pelvic pain, which isn't horrendous and feels like period cramps, and this is all month. I had my routine smear 5 days ago and was spotting then and bled for 3 days afterwards. I last had sex in October and did have some spotting then.

I mentioned this at my smear test but feel the nurse was rushing me out. She said it's probably my age (43 with no signs of menopause) and when I asked if my cervix looked healthy she told me she saw an ectropian. I'm pretty well educated about cervical health but I am a little worried. She also incorrectly told me that there's no chance of cervical cancer without HPV.

Anyone else have health issues explained away because of age? It's a little worrying.

  • I will also add that my periods are regular and never late or early

  • Hello Emilyem

I'm sorry to hear that you've been experiencing some unusual pain and bleeding. It's understandable that you may be feeling concerned.

Whilst it's good to know that you've recently had your routine cervical screening appointment it would be a good idea to make an appointment with your GP to discuss your other symptoms. It may be that they decide to wait for your screening results before doing any further investigations but it may also be that they request other tests or referrals in the meantime.

Hopefully whatever is causing your symptoms can be easily resolved but do make that appointment to get the ball rolling.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you.

I've presented myself at the GP twice and at no point has anyone actually looked. I've been referred for a scan, for which I'm told there is a 10 week wait (this was 6 weeks ago). In the meantime, the bleeding is worse, the pelvic pain intermittent and now have clots.

I'm concerned that no one seems to be listening to me because my smear was HPV negative. Obviously I'm hoping that it is something benign, but I'm worried :(
