Passing blood and worried

Hi everyone,
Back in January I had two weeks of rectal bleeding. It was accompanied with very sharp pain near the anus when having a bowel movement, and I self diagnosed as having an anal fissure. It cleared up in two weeks and all was fine.

Over a month later, I had the pain again and it started bleeding again. It’s an incredibly sharp burning/tearing pain when I have a bowel movement. There is blood on one side of the stool but not on the other. I have also passed small blood clots on two occasions now. The blood is bright red in colour.

I went to the GP and told him all about it. I said I thought I must have a fissure but the clots scared me so I came in. He looked at my bum and said he thought he could see a small tear at the two o clock position. He did a digital exam and said he couldn’t feel and lumps and his gloved finger was clean so the blood wasn’t coming from inside?!

He gave me aftercare instructions for a fissure and said to come back if it’s persistent. If I bleed a lot to go to A and E. I just don’t see how I could be having small blood clots (that look a little like my period, but obviously from a different place) and that be from an external source?

I have no stomach pain. Bowel habit has been normal for me. I have a full blood count every two months for other drug monitoring and I don’t think I’m anemic.

Just looking for advice or experiences really. I feel very worried. Thanks so much for taking the time to read.

  • I'm sorry to hear about the symptoms you've been contending with and for the worry they are causing Sb1706.

It's good you got this checked by your doctor but if you're not feeling totally reassured, don't hesitate to get a second opinion, maybe by a different doctor if you have more than one working at your doctor's surgery.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice but in the meantime, we're thinking of you Sb1706 and will have our fingers crossed things starts to improve for you soon.

    Kind regards,
