Enlarged Spleen

Hi everyone (sorry if I rant on!)

Almost 2 months ago I had a liver MRI and MRCP.

I am getting increasingly worried about my spleen.

I was told that it is swollen at 19cm with splenic infarcts.

I have been referred to haematology by my gastroenterologists.

Around 3-4 weeks ago my gp had a request for so many specialised hospital type blood tests to be taken.

They are suspecting a blood disorder/disease as the cause of the swollen spleen.

Does anyone know anything about enlarged spleens?

The pain around my back and upper left stomach is increasing to the point where I’m crying and I don’t know what to do.

I live in a deprived area- the NHS here are trying and doing a wonderful job but are equally struggling as waiting lists here are the worst in the uk.

I’m 29 and worrying in case I have a type of blood cancer or in case my spleen ruptures- maybe abit over dramatic but the pain and other symptoms are preventing me from living my life at this point.

If someone could relate to enlarged spleens or give advice/more information, I’d appreciate it,

Thank you

  • Hello Hope4132,

I am so sorry to hear about your worries about your enlarged spleen. It's good though that they are taking it seriously and that they have ordered all these tests to investigate what the cause might be and hopefully you will be seen soon by the specialist at haematology. It's a shame that you live in an area where waiting lists are very long and I really hope that you won't need to wait very long.

It does sound like the pain is very strong and if it is making you cry and affecting your quality of life, it may be a good idea to give your GP a call and see if they can give you adequate pain relief.

Other members of our community may have also been affected by enlarged spleens and will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

I hope that you get some definite answers soon on what is causing this swollen spleen and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern. Keep us updated if you don't mind when you find out more. We'll be keeping everything crossed for you!

    Best wishes,

  • Hope4132 I have totally same thing they just request more blood tests which is not done yet. How are you feeling now? Any update yet?

  • Hi Amilia, Sorry I’m just updating now, there has been quite a few things going on.

I spent 8 days in hospital (just got out last week) where the doctors did blood tests everyday. There is high calcium levels and a lymph node was found but might need a biopsy in 6 months pending review.

A CT was done of my stomach and my spleen turned out to be enlarged because of Liver Cirrhosis. I’m still coming to terms with this diagnosis as I don’t drink or anything.

The liver Cirrhosis is caused by newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

I’ve lost just over a stone in weight already within two weeks and feeling worse.

My advice would be to keep pushing the doctors, secretary or even your gp. You know your own body and an enlarged spleen is terrifying (especially when googling it) and can be quite painful.

Don’t let them put you down, I was told many times that the pain shouldn’t be as severe but another doctor had told me that the pain was coming from the spleen.

i hope your cause is found and that your spleen returns to normal!

    *update*

Received a letter earlier today for an ultrasound guided core biopsy of a lymph node under my arm, absolutely terrified!
