Inner elbow and breast lump - tender nodes

Hello, I have been putting off writing as hoping my red flag referral would come up but I am in Northern Ireland there is a 12 week wait for red flag breast referrals (I know ..)

I found a breast lump 3 weeks ago, quickly followed by a painless lump above inner elbow and have been having pain in that arm since then. Tonight I have discovered tender ‘bean’ (I think they are lymph nodes) right along this arm.

I am convinced that I have breast cancer and it has spread into my lymph nodes. I have no other signs of being unwell.

I don’t know how to cope with this wait as I am convinced it is cancer and it’s just getting worse as these symptoms keep appearing . I have three small kids :(

  • Hello Scared-Sarah,

Poor you, 12 week long waits for breast referrals in Northern Ireland - I can understand why this is making so anxious as it is a long time to have to wait. Given that you have discovered new symptoms and you are worried that it relates to the lymph nodes, I would give the GP a call and flag this and see whether there is any chance you might be seen earlier. Do mention too that you are ready to take any cancellations if it means you can be seen sooner. Any symptoms or issues that you didn't have when you first saw the doctor about this it is worth bringing up and updating them and seeing whether there is anything they can do or if it's just a long waiting game. I think it's important to present them with all the facts and symptoms first though if you haven't done so already and if new symptoms have crept up since you last saw the doctor.

I thought I would also share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope that you can talk to someone very soon and mention these new symptoms that have appeared. Other members of our community may have had a similar experience before and I hope that they will have some helpful words for you based on their personal stories.

    Best wishes,
