Equivocal Kidney Cyst

I am a 49 year old female and have experienced blood in my urine along with pain in my back etc. I recently experienced a nasty episode of hematuria in my urine. My GP sent me for a cystoscopy and CT scan. I have just received my results which reveal that I have an equivocal cyst in my left kidney. They are recommending a follow up CT scan in 6 months. From what I've read, equivocal renal cysts could be nothing to worry about but also they may be malignant. Does a follow up scan in 6 months sound reasonable or should I be pushing for a sooner follow up? I believe waiting six months is known as Watchful Waiting?

  • Hi The_Sweeney,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand your questions - if the doctor or specialist team were particularly concerned, it's likely they would be recommending a follow-up sooner. So do try to take some reassurance if you can - although if you remain worried, you can always give your doctor a call to talk things through.

In the meantime, you are welcome to post in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum in order to get a reply from one of our nurses. Or you can call freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5 - if you'd like to speak to one of them.

    Wishing you all the best,
