Terrified I have lung cancer

Hello, I am looking for some advice and support regarding what happens when you have a chest xray.

I have had very mild vague pain in the left side of my chest and left shoulder blade area for about a year now and I have lost around 4kg in weight within 8 months unintentionally.

My GP did bloods which all came back clear and she sent me for a chest xray which I went for 10 days ago.

I'm 46 and a smoker and both my parents passed away from lung cancer which is making me absolutely terrified.

Could anyone advise me on whether a chest xray result would have already been sent to my doctor by now if anything concerning had shown up?

I've been googling my symptoms and it's coming up with lung cancer as a possibility.

The pain I get is only mild and comes in brief episodes, sometimes it feels like a flash of nerve type pain and sometimes it's like a throb, I get it in the side of my left breast and around my armpit into the shoulder blade and sometimes it goes down my arm.

I am so worried I'm driving myself mad so any advice would be very much appreciated.

  • Hi Moosmum,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Unfortunately it's not possible to say if results would have been sent by now - sometimes things can take a little longer. It's also not possible to use the waiting time length to predict what the results might be. Hopefully at your appointment you were given an idea of when to expect to hear back. If it goes beyond this time, you can always give your doctor a call to check.

Do try to avoid looking things up on Google in the meantime, as a lot of the information won't be relevant and it often only tends to increase worries.

    Wishing you all the best,
