Diagnosed with oral thrush, but it keeps coming back. I'm worried it might be mouth cancer

I have been experiencing sore white patches at the base of.my tongue for the last 5 months. It went away initially with treatment for oral thrush, as this is what my nurse diagnosed it as. But it keeps coming back and this time it is really painful when I swallow or eat.and the white round patch is always in the same place. It's starting to worry me that it could be something more. Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks. X
