Results of my lung health CT scan

I’ve just had a letter with results of my lung health CT scan. The letter said they found a small nodule and I have to have another one in 3 months.
also they detected emphysema from when I was a smoker ( gave up nearly four years ago.
plus signs of hardening of arteries.
I’m terrified. They said a leaflet was enclosed but no leaflet was on the letter.
Sounds like I’m well and truly on the way out. Is there any point in thinking this is not a bad result?
I need to start making plans. I’m 68 and they’ve told me to see my doctor but it’s impossible to get appointments there.
Im in shock.
of course I know this is my own fault for smoking all these years but I’m very scared now. I’m not usually a pathetic panicked but this has thrown me.

  • Hello Moyad,

I am so sorry to hear you are feeling so anxious after receiving this letter with your scan results. It sounds like they forgot to enclose the leaflet with the letter - perhaps you could ring them and ask them to send that leaflet or to tell you more about the results?

I know it's really hard but try if you can not to anticipate the worst until you have received clarification on what the results are and what they mean. I would get in touch with your surgery and ask to see your doctor or speak to someone about your results as soon as possible as you cannot be left in the dark like this especially if you didn't even get the leaflet explaining things to you.

Please don't blame yourself for smoking all those years and well done for giving up 4 years ago as it's not an easy thing to do. I just wanted you to know that you are not alone and that many members of our forum will relate to the anxiety you are currently experiencing as you are waiting for a definite diagnosis. Waiting certainly isn't easy and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Do let us know how you get on if you get a chance and we are keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing too concerning.

    Best wishes,
