Melanoma in situ

good evening all

I took myself to the drs in December about a black irregular flat mole on the side of my neck that I thought had changed shape. I could never see it properly due to its position. Long story short I was referred to an derm and it was cut out and sent for biopsy in January. I had the results today and the consultant said they found cancer cells on the top layer but nothing underneath, it’s a melanoma in situ. It was a huge shock and I’m a very anxious person and I’ve been really upset today. I’m 36 and some people I’ve spoken to have said they had the same or know of someone who has but they are all in their 60s or older so I feel I am young? The consultant wants me to go back in a few months (I will receive a letter as she said non urgent) where she will extend my current scar to take further tissue away to be sure. Obviously I am still so worried even though she said it was on the very top layer. She gave me a full body scan and checked all of my moles and freckles and I have a lot! She said nothing to cause concern but I must now keep an eye and I’ve got the guidance on how to protect myself better in the sun. I don’t sunbathe anymore I’m not a fan of the sun and I haven’t for years but in my younger days my sun protection could’ve been better. I’m terrified it will come back elsewhere or that they missed some of it and it’s still there. I also have a cluster of freckles under my boob that again I’ve had for years but I can never see, I’m not sure she spotted that early as my bra covered it and I’m worried that needs to be checked. Honestly I feel so worried.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, Eclipse11, although I'm sorry to hear about the reason that brings you here.

Facing a melanoma diagnosis, even if it's in situ, can be incredibly overwhelming, especially at a young age so it's completely understandable to feel worried and anxious about the possibility of recurrence. However, it's positive that your consultant is being proactive in your follow-up care, including extending the scar to ensure all the affected tissue is removed.

Being vigilant about monitoring your skin and practicing sun protection are important steps in managing melanoma and reducing the risk of further issues. It's good to hear that your consultant gave you guidance on sun protection, and it's important to continue following those recommendations.

Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Many here will understand exactly how you're feeling and I hope some of them will stop by soon to chat with you.

Please take care of yourself, both physically and emotionally, and know that it's okay to feel worried.

    Warm regards,

    Renata, Cancer Chat Moderator
