Hi. I'm new here. I had a mammogram, an ultra sound and then on the same day a biopsy taken. I was told just to go home and wait for the results. It's been a week and a half. Can anyone tell me if this is normal procedure please.

Hi Motherdanny,
A very warm welcome to our forum.
This is always a worrying wait and it feels like forever. It normally takes at least 2 weeks to get your biopsy results, although in some areas, it can take longer than this. It is always helpful, after any test, to ask when you can expect the results, as this gives you an approximate time scale.
Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma, or due to hormonal changes. It is a fact that out of all who attend the clinic, only 20% will get a cancer diagnosis. Did they advise you to bring someone with you when you return for your results? This is always a good idea.
You shouldn't have much longer to wait now and I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
Kind regards,

Hi. Thankyou for the reply. They told me to go home and wait for a call and yes they did say to bring someone with me. I assume when they have the results then I will get a call to go back to see the consultant? I'm so worried due to family history with breast cancer xx
Hi,
They will usually phone or write to you with an appointment. The reason for the delay is that the consultant holds a regular Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting, with all of the other health care professionals, who are likely to be involved in your care, if needed. At this meting all the returned biopsy results are discussed and a decision is usually reached on the best way to proceed from there. After this meeting, your consultant will contact you to discuss their findings.
I understand your worry. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, along with a number of other relatives. Unfortunately, I have since had 2 bouts of breast cancer. However, that was all 14 years ago and I sill lead a busy and fulfilling life. This is one of the most worrying parts of any cancer journey. Try to keep yourself preoccupied with anything that will help to take your mind off the wait.
Kind regards,
Jolamine xx
You really are so kind. I lost my mum 8 years ago to breast cancer and my nan had it so did her 3 sisters. I have other health issues and just feel like I'm driving myself crazy waiting for the results. It's so nice to be able to share with others and have a chance to talk with someone xx
I am so sorry to hear that you too lost your mum to breast cancer and that so many other relatives have had it too. Having such a family history does heighten the anxiety, but no amount of worry will change the outcome. Many of us find this a good place to come and discuss our feelings, without constantly upsetting loved ones.
Don't forget that we are always here for you.
Kind regards,
Jolamine xx
