Having my liver/pancreas checked. Bloods normal.

Hi, I’m new here. I apologise in advance if I sound like I’m just flapping - I probably am. Ps; it’s going to be a long one

I’m a 25 year old woman with 4 children (1 bio and 3 stepkids) I’ve had IBS for years and I feel like my GP keeps blaming my symptoms on that, even though they don’t follow my normal IBS patterns.

For the last 2-3 months I’ve had epigastric pain under my ribs. It started fairly off and on but now it’s every day. This pain also goes into the mid/top of my back on the right side where a woman’s bra strap would sit. It’s affecting my sleep as I have to sleep sat up and I’ve had no appetite (lost a stone in 8-9 months without trying). My bowels have been alternating between severe constipation that I got prescribed colonoscopy prep for, or the polar opposite where I’m going 10-12 times a day. I do not smoke or drink alcohol.

I’ve had a few blood tests, some of which came back borderline but nothing horrific. I had an ultrasound to rule out gallstones where my liver was said to be slightly fatty and they couldn’t see my pancreas as it was tucked behind my bowel. I then had a gastroscopy to rule out gastritis, all fine, and I had a CT last Friday on my pelvis/abdomen.

It is now the following Sunday and I ended up in A&E on Friday with slightly yellow eyes, dark urine and more pain. I’ve had several nosebleeds in the last few days which I’ve never had before. I’ve also been having bad fatigue that’s had be in bed for the last 3 days. He assessed my belly and saw how much pain I was in around the liver area. My urine dip was clear and my bloods were again, only borderline. The doctors suggested it would be a waste to keep me in over the weekend for tests when I’ve already had a CT, and suggested I should just wait for my results. I called my GP and they said I’ve got at least another week wait as there’s a backup still from Christmas.

Sorry this is a bit of a long post, but I’m just worried. I’m worried I’ve been ignored due to my age and somethings been missed. I’m usually so active, my youngest being 4 and I just cannot keep up. I’m falling asleep during the day, in pain after I eat anything even if it’s small and I just can’t keep going on like this. I know you shouldn’t, but I’ve read about the rare forms of FLC liver cancer that happen within my age bracket and it worries me.

  • Hello Pickle0208 and welcome to the forum.

I'm really sorry to hear about your symptoms and for the worry this is understandably causing.

I hope the results of your CT scan are finally able to shed some light on what's going on but if you'd like to discuss any of this with one of our nurses whilst you wait, you can call them on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to ease your mind during this anxious time.

I also hope it won't be long until you receive some support and advice from our members who have been in a similar situation, but in the meantime, we're thinking of you Pickle0208 and will have our fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thank you for your kind words. I received my results, however they’ve left me more puzzled as they look normal. I’m still in a great deal of pain, not sleeping and have a yellow hue to my eyes which is new. I know people probably just look at me and think I’m going crazy but this pain is consistent. I don’t want to be that person to say ‘oh well what if something was missed’ but I feel I just need to accept it and get on with it if you will.

  • Hi, I am in the exact same situation as yourself.  I have pretty much all pancreatic symptoms:-

nausea, no appetite, really bad back ache, upper abdomen pain, indigestion.

I have had bloods twice (all normal) I have had a cat scan (which apparently was normal) due to hopefully have ultra sound next week.
But they way I am feeling I just don’t believe them, I feel so exhausted with small children myself it’s so worrying.
I feel like I am going out of my mind, I have been out of a&e 3 times, gp I have lost count, I have also had an upper gi which came back normal.
I feel like I am going out of my mind. I’m so scared!
I think I really want to push for MRI but I think at this point every gp I have seen thinks I’m crazy!

  • I’m so sorry you’re going through this too! I still have pains daily but I’m trying to focus on the facts I’ve been presented. I am now being referred to rheumatology for possible fibromyalgia. I have also completely cut out refined sugar and gluten from my diet and eat very minimal dairy if I can help it. (Mostly eating things that are single foods ie fruit, veg, meat, fish, rice etc) This has helped the upper GI slightly but my back pain and bowels are pretty much the same. I’m definitely less bloated though which is a plus I guess.

Just go with your gut and advocate for yourself in any way you can. You know your body best! My son starts school in September so if I’m still struggling, I will have more time to go back and forth to the doctors if necessary. Don’t give up x

  • Thank you for your reply!
It’s very debilitating having all these symptoms and feeling so ill with no answer!

I do suffer with severe health anxiety which doesn’t help , but I know this is not in my head which several doctors have basically said.

Yes I have been thinking about addressing my diet myself (although I have always been a fairly good eater) but I might cut out bread etc.

im trying to believe in the doctors but it’s very hard when you feel like this!

I hope you find some answers! Keep me posted, thinking of you xx
