2 week fast track referral to to colorectal doctors- scared!

Hi, I’m 26F with 2 children and currently 20 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I have been having bleeding during bowel movements for over a year, I was told during my last pregnancy it was normal and likely hemorrhoids so I ignored it. It wasnt until my blood results came back with low ferritin (6.0) and I was asked if I had any bleeding that I really thought about it. Since then I’ve been put on iron tablets and my GP ordered a FIT test which came back positive (260). I’ve now been fast tracked to colorectal doctors for investigations, GP said I should hear from them next week. My symptoms are rectal bleeding with every bowel movement, bright red & sometimes with clots & no weight gain during pregnancy so far which they are classing as “weight loss”, I also have had issues with acid reflux and gas since a teenager.

Rectal exam showed no haemorrhoids and Dr said internal felt fine.

My GP has ordered more bloods including FBC, iron, liver & kidney function, bone profile & hba1c. So far only my FBC is back and everything was fine apart from hematocrit was elevated (86).

I’m extremely worried about colon cancer, has anyone experienced anything similar or has any input?

thank you.

  • I know it’s so difficult to try and not obsess over it or not overthink it in the middle of nite when you are lying awake but I hope that hearing a wee good news story helps. Honestly I was utterly convinced that there was NO other explanation for all my list of symptoms but today has proven me wrong.
definitely chase up your GP if you don’t hear anything but hopefully the fact you are pregnant will also help them to prioritise you if at all possible.
Will be thinking about you xx

( and yes think I will treat myself to a nice glass of fizz over the weekend to celebrate )

  • Hi kay,

just wondering how you are doing and if you’ve had any word from colorectal team?
    Hope you are ok x

  • Hi, I actually have my first appointment with the colorectal surgeon tomorrow! I’m so nervous it hopefully they suggest a colonoscopy asap so I have some answers.

    thanks for asking x

  • That’s great, I’m glad that the ball has started rolling for you- hopefully you will get it all over and done with and get your mind put at rest so you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!
if they do suggest the colonoscopy please don’t worry about the procedure, I was expecting it to be absolutely awful but I can say it was at most moderately uncomfortable for a few mins but honestly not too bad at all! the prep is inconvenient and obviously not pleasant to drink but again it wasn’t truly awful.
Will keep my fingers crossed for you xx

  • Hi! Just wanted to let you know that my appointment with the consultant went well, they did an internal exam with a camera and saw 3 internal Hemorrhoids that were “the bleeding kind” . She said she’s confident this is what’s causing my symptoms and positive FIT test, and that my low ferritin is due to the pregnancy! She’s given me a prescription for a better laxative and she’s scheduled a colonoscopy for after baby is born to 100% rule out anything sinister. I really hope she’s right but she was very confident so fingers crossed! Xx

  • Aww that’s great, I’m so pleased it went well and the consultant was so positive. I hope you feel like a huge cloud has been lifted from you.
it sounds like we have both had very similar results in terms of internal haemorrhoids which bleed.
I’ve been thinking about you and I’m just so happy for you that you got good news.
wishing you all the very best with the rest of your pregnancy and birth when it comes xx
