2 week fast track referral to to colorectal doctors- scared!

Hi, I’m 26F with 2 children and currently 20 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I have been having bleeding during bowel movements for over a year, I was told during my last pregnancy it was normal and likely hemorrhoids so I ignored it. It wasnt until my blood results came back with low ferritin (6.0) and I was asked if I had any bleeding that I really thought about it. Since then I’ve been put on iron tablets and my GP ordered a FIT test which came back positive (260). I’ve now been fast tracked to colorectal doctors for investigations, GP said I should hear from them next week. My symptoms are rectal bleeding with every bowel movement, bright red & sometimes with clots & no weight gain during pregnancy so far which they are classing as “weight loss”, I also have had issues with acid reflux and gas since a teenager.

Rectal exam showed no haemorrhoids and Dr said internal felt fine.

My GP has ordered more bloods including FBC, iron, liver & kidney function, bone profile & hba1c. So far only my FBC is back and everything was fine apart from hematocrit was elevated (86).

I’m extremely worried about colon cancer, has anyone experienced anything similar or has any input?

thank you.

  • Hi Kay,

sorry you are having to go through this worry when you are pregnant.
I am bit older than you but have a teenage daughter so understand how worried you are.
I went to Gp with bright red bleeding, discomfort and constipation a few weeks ago and am having a colonoscopy later today ( I also suffer from bouts of acid reflux/ indigestion pain and have done for a few years)

although I’m not in exactly same situation as you I just wanted to reply, I will come back once I’ve had my results and hopefully I will get good news and can put your mind at rest a little bit.

    Take care x

  • Thanks so much for replying, I’m so worried I’m struggling to eat and sleep. I hope your colonoscopy goes well and you get reassuring results x

  • I can imagine exactly how you are feeling, I have been the same in terms of not being able to sleep and having zero appetite. I’ve hardly managed to eat anything other than toast, yogurts and pancakes for last 3 weeks which then plays havoc with trying to figure out if weight loss/ tummy discomfort is due to lack of food or something else!
I know it’s almost impossible to do but try your best to eat when you can, especially as you have a wee baby on board. X

I promise I’ll come back on here and let you know what happens with me today. X

  • Thank you it’s comforting knowing someone else knows how I feel. My husband has been making me protein shakes so I’m getting some calories but I’m just struggling with actual food! Good luck for today, will you get your results straight away? I hear the prep for colonoscopy is the worst part x

  • I wish neither of us were in this situation but it’s nice to know someone’s else is experiencing the same emotions/ fears and can relate.
That’s good that your husband is looking after you and you are managing to get the protein shakes in you.

prep wasn’t too bad to be honest, the only problem I had was with the 2nd dose this morning- I just couldn’t keep it down and was sick. I’m hoping I managed to retain enough of it  that it’s done what it needed to and everything will be ok with the colonoscopy today.
I think I will be told today if they see concerning/ took biopsies or removed any polyps or hopefully be told there was nothing to see at all and it’s all normal! Fingers crossed!! X

  • Thinking of you, hope everything went okay! X

  • Hi,

It all went great, thanks so much for asking.
I have inflammation and also some internal haemorrhoids which have been the source of bleeding.
    No polyps or biopsies required.
I am so relieved and feeling very lucky and thankful.

honestly try and not worry too much, I know it’s so much easier said than done but I think that lack of food, sleep and stress and worry made all my symptoms worse.

I hope you get appointment through soon and that you have the same experience as me, I’ll keep a wee check on this thread to see how you are getting on or if you have any Q about colonoscopy or prep if you end up having one.
    xx

  • Hi glad to hear it went well its such a relief isn't it ,now you can relax and get on with living ,I felt exactly the same well done x

  • Oh that’s brilliant news I’m so relieved for you! Thanks for coming back to let me know. My doctor said if I don’t hear from the colorectal team next too I have to let her know, so hopefully I will speak to them soon. I will take your advice and try and put it to the back of my mind until my appointment!  I’m so pleased for you! You’ll have to find some way to celebrate xx

  • Thanks Jenny, yes honestly felt like the weight of the world was lifted on my shoulders when I walked out the hospital.
it’s definitely made me focus on looking after myself a bit better from now on!
    thanks again x
