dads lung cancer might be back

Hi everyone,

So my dad had lung cancer in January 2021 and only needed surgery to remove the tumor and he was fine but unfortunately 2 weeks ago he went for a review where he had an urgent chest x ray which demonstrated a new right hilar mass and right sided pleural effusion. There is clear evidence of right paracardiac mass which strongly suggests of lung cancer recurrence we know nothing yet properly apart from the fluid in his lung which needs to be drained and the new mass. We're just waiting for his appointment now to have it drained and biopsy at the same time. Does that mean he could have cancer in the fluid as well as a tumor? I just want this appointment to come quickly now so we know where we're at!! Could it even be something non cancerous? I don't know but my patience is wearing thin. Anyone else experience something like this? I would appreciate if anyone could shed light on anything. Thank you

  • Hello Zee91

I'm sorry to hear that following your Dad's recent review he's been told the news that his cancer may have returned. It's obviously a very difficult time for you all and understandable that you will have questions and concerns.

Have the team told you when your Dad is likely to have an appointment to have the fluid drained and a biopsy done? Hopefully, it won't be too long until this happens and the team will be able to get back to you with the results quickly.

We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult, particularly if you or a loved one has previously had a cancer diagnosis. It's natural that our minds can go to worst-case scenarios. It can sometimes help to talk through our concerns with someone and I wonder if you might find it helpful to speak with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can along with helping you think about any questions you might want to ask the specialists. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope you all have some news soon Zee91. Keep in touch and let us know how things progress.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn,

Thank you so much for your reply, we spoke to someone today about when they’ll do it and they said at the end of the month but that still feels long to me because he’s really struggling to sleep properly at the moment and he’s just uncomfortable and I think part of that is due to him feeling anxious about everything! Not knowing is the worse part.

I will keep you updated and let you know what’s going on we can only hope for some good news.

    Best wishes
