Bone Marrow Biopsy - PKB 'Result'

Hi all,

This is probably going to be a bit jumbled, it's been a hell of a year. I am 35 F for the record!

So this time last year (ish), I ended up in A&E with what turned out to be a raging Bladder infection. I had all the tests, blood, urine - they were trying to tell me covid etc! I had tiny little bruises all over my face, neck and upper arms (petichea?) So they dosed me up with antibiotics and told me to come back the next day to see a consultant and get my bloods done again.  So I do so... I can see him wavering on a decision, ultimately he tells me everything is good apart from my platelets which are high, but probably down to the infection.  I'm told to go get better and redo the blood work through my GP and see of I need an official referral.  Turns out they got higher and I did!   Wait for my referral for a while, (in the meantime get pregnant!) Eventually after what feels like being drained of all my blood they call me back after a bit of investigation and tell me that my platelets have been high since 2016 ... news to me and a tad concerning!

A few extra bloodworks later plus extra through my midwife, they conclude that I need a bone marrow biopsy, but need to wait to have my baby before that procedure can go ahead.

So I take asprin for the duration of my pregnancy and end up having a csection and 6 weeks of blood thinning injections... chase up the appointment as I'd not had any contact and Eventually got the date through for the bone marrow biopsy. (Last month now)

In the meantime and in my postpartum funk, i had a multitude of infections, throat... sinus.. my tongue swelled and i had to take a 17 year old piercing out, my ear got infected and i had to remove my earring... I got an abcess under my wisdom tooth and had that removed! All the while utterly exhausted, mentally spent etc (my mum passed away 4 months after my son was born from metastatic breast cancer, she was only 69) With all this going on, I went to the GP to ask the questions and find out what was going on.  On looking at one of my recent bloodworks he arranged an ultrasound on my liver as one of my levels looked iffy (and I'd been told in the past I have metabolic syndrome, I've got HBP) so went and had that scan which found an enlarged spleen, gallstones and a fatty liver... ended up going for an MRI also as they thought there was a mass which turned out to be focal fatty sparing. Fun right.

So after this, I went and had the bone marrow biopsy, they have posted limited information on patients know best, it basically says "Clotted slides, Particled Hypercellular, Megakaryocytes Plentiful and some large forms".  One of the slides also had a large clot so it couldn't be used...

Doesn't sound good to me and the problem I've now got is that all the bare facts without a conversation with my consultant look like ET and I'm desperate to have an official diagnosis but they have pushed my end of Feb appointment back a whole bloody month.

With everything that has happened in the last year, I just want it done with! Im not sure if this is a rant or a plea for advice?! Perhaps someone here had similar findings?

Honestly im not even bothered if it is ET, I just want to crack on and get it managed so I don't feel like *** all the time!

If you made it this far - fair play. Thank you so much for sticking with me! I've probably missed a tonne out but I can fill in the blanks if necessary.

  • A very warm welcome to the forum TornadoBarb although I'm sorry to read everything you have been through and that your appointment with the consultant to discuss your bone marrow results has been pushed back another month. This must be incredibly frustrating.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar situation will share their thoughts, experience and advice with you soon but if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They're very supportive and will do all they can to address your concerns and hopefully ease your worries whilst you wait.

We're thinking of you TornadoBarb and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome next month.

    Kind regards,
