Waiting for diagnosis

Hello,

I noticed my nipple was flat on the 23rd December and then found a lump in my breast and another under my armpit. What with Christmas etc, I didn't get to see the doctor until the 3rd January who made an urgent referral for me and I was seen this Tuesday. The consultant didn't go as far to say it is cancer, however he did say it was very worrying and immediately referred me for an MRI and CT scan. I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy on Tuesday and have an appointment scheduled for next Wednesday to speak to the consultant again. I'm really confused as to how I didn't feel it before, it's such a big lump! I know I checked myself in October, and I didn't feel anything. I have a bit of pain in my arm on and off too so am worried it might have spread. I am trying really hard not to worry but I can't help but get upset when I think about it, especially having to tell my family bad news. I'm 33 and my dad is poorly (with something that is hereditary so I'm worried about that, too!) But I don't want to worry my family now unless I need to.

My partner came with me to the appointment and will come with me next week. He is really struggling as well, his dad passed away when he was quite young from a brain tumour and he is naturally thinking the worst, although he is trying not to show it. Feel like I need to be strong for him.

I found this forum and just thought it might help writing it all down. The waiting is so hard!

  • Hi Ruth, I just wanted to say I am very sorry that you are going through this at such a young age. I am 44 and my story is very similar to you. I went to the breast clinic Tuesday they said it wasn’t a cyst as originally thought and it’s very concerning. I had 2 biopsies scans and mammograms. I had a mri Friday and have to return on 2/2 for my results. This is the worst thing I’ve ever endured as it’s the not knowing. My children are 16/17 and were aware I was going and I’ve had to be honest that they are doing more tests. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers please let us know how you get on. Reach out if you want to talk.

  • Hello, I am thinking of you today hope your appointment goes well.

The consultant confirmed to me on Wednesday that I do have breast cancer. Just waiting on the HER2 marker to see if I have surgery or chemo first. I need a mastectomy on the left side and lymph nodes removing. I wasn't really shocked but wow it was hard telling my mum!

Let me know how you get on today and I'm here if you ever need to talk to anyone.

  • Hi Ruth, I too have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Went with a small lump that I thought was a cyst. Turned out it wasn't  and  they also found a larger lump, which can't believe I missed. My results came back HER2 positive, so will be having chemo and Herceptin, then mastectomy further down the line, where they will take lymph nodes as well. Wishing you well on your forward journey. Xx
