Confused about mums breast biopsy results

Hi just after some advice-

mum had a breast biopsy which came back as benign. She received a letter saying the following:

“This lady elected to have a phone consultation, together with her daughter, for her results rather than come
to the Breast Clinic as previously arranged. I have therefore phoned to speak to both of them and
fortunately the results were a benign biopsy with reparative fibroplasia, which I have explained is some
scarring tissue and granulation tissue again from previous tissue repair consistent with cyst rupture, which
would be concordant with her history of squeezing the longstanding cyst and the porridge contents coming
out.

The MDT felt that there was a degree of non-concordance with the imaging, which had been slightly more
concerning due to the slightly ill-defined edges of it, but that would be consistent with her description of
induration and squeezing of the cyst content and the lack of previous recent imaging for comparison.

MDT therefore have advised a follow up mammogram and ultrasound in 3 month's time in Radiology,
which I have requested today.

I have emphasised the importance of having the follow up as arranged.”

If they were highly concerned surely they’d of done another biopsy? It’s the non concordance bit with the scans that has scared me. Would they really make her wait three months if they thought it were cancer?

  • Hi Nhj91,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your concerns, but it doesn't sound as if they are particularly worried about the results of your mum's scan and biopsy. I am not a doctor, but it sems as if  your mum has previously had a long-standing benign cyst, which she has squeezed to remove the contents. It has obviously ruptured at some point, leaving some benign tissue in the surrounding area. The edges of a cancerous tumour tend to be quite jagged and clearly defined, but your mum's were less well defined, which could be due to squeezing it over time. They will usually compare an image like this with previous scans, but as your mum doesn't have any recent ones, there is nothing to compare this to.

They have arranged further imaging for 3 months, to give them time to see if there are any noticeable changes in this time, which is reassuring. They are not taking any chances. It will take that time to see if any changes occur and to ensure that all remains benign.

Please keep in touch and let us know how the tests go in three months. In the meantime, we are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
