The waiting game

Hi everyone this is my first post. Went to the breast care clinic yesterday having found a lump in November. I was quite confident it was a cyst but after an ultrasound and a biopsy I was told it is most likely a small cancerous lump. They have already made an appointment to see a consultant next Friday (which seems a lifetime away but I really appreciate how quickly it’s being dealt with). I am 57 and on HRT and am wondering if I should stop the HRT immediately or wait another week?  Sending love to all of you going through the same journey!

  • Hi Jude,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about these results and hope that the consultant can shed more light on things. I am not a doctor, so cannot advise about stopping the HRT. I know that many people are advised to stop when given a diagnosis. It might be worth phoning your breast care nurse about this. You may need to leave a message, but she will get back to you as soon as she can.

I sincerely hope that all goes well for you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your kind words. I will take your advice and put a call into one of the breast care nurses.

  • Hi Jude,

Best to do that and make sure.

Please  let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Jolamine I'm in a very similar situation - I was recalled after a routine mammogram I had in December for further breast screening- appointment was last week. They said they are pretty sure it's breast cancer but my appointment with the consultant to get definite results isn't until next week. 2 weeks wait is feeling like a lifetime. I too was on HRT and immediately started googling should I stop it. I read the patient information leaflet which said if you think you have cancer or have been diagnosed with it stop taking HRT. I didn't know if I'd be able to speak to a doctor for a couple of days so just made the decision so I've stopped it immediately. I probably should have spoken to my GP or a nurse but that's what I've done. I'm not advising anyone to do the same obviously it's up to everyone to make their own decision. Hope you are OK. I'm trying to carry on as normal but dreading the results appointment xx

  • Hi Jellabeth,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear of your situation. Waiting for results is always a worrying time. Was this your first mammogram? It is always scary when they tell you that they're pretty sure that it's cancer straight away, but it does give you some time to come to terms with a diagnosis, by the next time you see your consultant. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of one another and I was told this on both first visits. That was 14 years ago and I still lead a busy life. It sounds as if you've done the right thing by stopping your HRT, but make sure to discuss this at your next appointment.

This will feel like the longest 2 weeks of your life, but I hope that your results come through soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
