Results day tomorrow

Hi, just received a call to ask me to come to my consultants clinic tomorrow for my results, which they had told me would be two weeks, but has only been a week. I only saw one of her team last week, but this week I'm apparently going to see the consultant. Does this mean it's likely to be bad news? Has anyone else had results from the actual consultant and the news was good? Totally freaking out now!!

  • I'm still freaking out over getting results tomorrow. If anyone is on  chat at the moment who might be able to give a little reassurance, itcwould be greatly appreciated.

  • Hiya. There is absolutely no set pattern when getting results. Time of day, duration of waiting for results etc.

Some people have to wait weeks, and they get bad news, some people mere days and get good news. As for seeing who you are seeing, again, every doctor has their own preferences how they want to go through results. Maybe they are just one of those doctors that do it themselves. Believe me about the biopsies. They are done in batches, and no one gets preference over anyone. More than likely that either A) the lab isn't inundated or b) you got lucky and made the earlier batch than had you went the next day for the biopsies.

This is always a dreadful part of the diagnosis process, the not knowing and it can ramp up as the days draw closer.

Don't be surprised when you get to the hospital tomorrow if you begin to stare at the staff, just waiting for them to look in your general direction. If one looks glum you'll think you're doomed. We all do that.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it has really helped to reassure me. Finger's crossed the news will be good. Thanks again.

  • Both me and the wife laugh about this now, but it wasn't funny at the time. Our nerves were shot.

After my wife was diagnosed, the day came when we had to go into the oncologist for the full body scan results. There were 2 nurses hanging around the general area, and they were going in with certain couples, but not every couple. I called them the bad news nurses, because they'd leave with the patient after having sat in with the patient during the oncologist appointment. We overheard one of the nurses talking to the women. Anyway, we got called in, and i remember one of those nurses walking towards the same room we were heading to, and I wanted to tell her to sling her hook. She followed us in and only came in to ask the oncologist to confirm something else, then walked back out. I was 99% sure we were gonna be told the cancer was elsewhere in her body. But that wasn't the case. Plus the oncologist told us the nurses sit in with anyone who requests one prior to the appointment. But yeah, those nurses.

  • Thank you for sharing your story, so pleased your wife's cancer had not spread. I hope she is doing well with her recovery. It must be difficult for both of you going through this.

  • Was told I have two types of breast cancer, but very treatable. Dr was lovely and very reassuring. I will need surgery, radiotherapy and possibly chemo. Next step is mri scan an ct scan. As I was so worried about inflammatory breast cancer due to redness on breast, Dr suggested skin biopsy to put my mind at rest. Going back to see her next week. I feel calmer today than I have all week.

  • Sorry for the outcome, but as you've realised, knowing strangely has a calming effect. Don't be surprised if you start to get anxious over the scans too because until everything is laid out, and all the facts are at hand, you can put all your focus into the treatment. We found our anxiety levels drastically decreased at this point.

  • Thanks for your input, it has been a great help. I'm sure there is likely to be a bit of anxiety waiting for scan results, as they're checking that it hasn't spread. Will just try to carry on as normal in-between various appointments. Need to keep calm now, as don't want to go another week like last week!
