Breast lump diagnosis

Hi I'm 34 and found a lump in my breast, I was referred to a breast clinic and told they were going to do an ultra sound ( I wasn't surprised given my age and also being previously diagnosed with a fibroadenoma) during the ultra sound I was then told they were going to also do a mammogram and take a biopsy as she could see 'lumpy area'. I am a single mum of two aged 6 and 7 and terrified this time it's more serious.

  • HI Jo,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you are so worried about your latest symptoms. Are you aware that not all lumps are cancerous? Many turn out to be benign cysts, Fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes. It is a fact that only 20% of those referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis and, the younger you are, the less likely this is to happen.  It is also a fact that many women have naturally lumpy breasts. Sadly there are no guarantees, which is why we all work ourselves into such a state at this stage. Fortunately, things are seldom as bad as we imagine.

Have you been told when your results will be back yet? I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

PIease keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Thankyou I have been asked to go on Monday for my results

  • Hi thankyou for your reply, I should have gone back for my results on Monday but I have received a phone call this afternoon the lady said my results were now not going to be ready until the following week and they have given me a new appointment for Monday 22nd January. Is this normal? I am now worries they have found cancer and need to do further tests to find out more about it  xx

  • HI Jo,

This happens a lot. Your  consultant holds a regular MDT (multidisciplinary team) meeting with all of the professionals who are likely to be involved in your care if needed. They discuss all the results that are back that week and what they should do about them. Sometimes results are not back in time for that meeting or things overrun and have to be deferred to another date. They are also probably still dealing with a backlog from the holiday period.

This is always a worrying wait, but try not to overthink things. One piece of advice in the meanwhile - try not to Google. Most of the articles are based on the more spectacular cases, won't apply to you, won't give you any answers, yet will scare you even further.

PIease keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
