Left sided kidney, groin and lower back pain

Hi,

I was just Looking for some advice, or reassurance

6weeks ago I was getting pain in my kidneys (in my back below my ribs) so went doctors thinking it was a urine infection. Dr done a urine sample which showed blood in, (it’s never been visible to me in wee) so gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics and said she was sending urine off. I phoned the following week, and was told my urine was fine, by then I had finished my course of antibiotics. I was feeling sick but wasn’t sick. And a few days later started getting pain in my belly (top of belly, kidney area on my left side) and feeling achy, and getting stabbing pains in the middle of my stomach. I went back to the GP and she said she wanted an ultrasound so she referred me… my period has been quite weird, lasting 2 days but a weird brown colour, looks like old blood. GP done another urine sample which still had blood and traces of protein, so she suspected Kidney stones and referred me for a CT scan. Had the scan and all was clear. Had blood tests my seren C protein was slightly raised, my red blood cells and haemoglobin was raised too. My GP then said that at this stage she was referring me under the 2 week pathway and checking for cancer. Has anyone else had the same or similar? I don’t expect anyone to diagnose but just feel shocked she’s said that when it seems any one I spoke to seemed intent on it being my kidney stones and to go from that to possibly cancer has put the fear of the worse into me..

thank you for reading,

  • Hello Worried-mum36,

it's normal to be worried after being referred under the 2 week pathway but try not to be too anxious if you can as it may be your GP is being thorough and it doesn't mean it is definitely cancer but it is a good idea to do all the necessary investigations. You seem to be in very good hands having had an ultrasound scan, a CT scan and all these blood tests and it won't be too long now I am sure until you find out exactly what is going on. You can read more on our website about your urgent cancer referral and as mentioned there "most people who are referred will not have cancer, but if they do early diagnosis and treatment are important". I hope you won't have to wait too long to be seen and in the meantime, I thought I would share with you these helpful tips  to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that it turns out to be nothing of concern.  Hopefully you will hear from other members of our community who have had similar symptoms and who have been through similar tests and I hope that they will come and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie, thank you so much for your response, it has helped. I will have a look at the links you posted too.
it’s terrible, I literally lost my Mum last year to cancer too  *heartbroken emoji* so then to receive letters with my name and cancer department has been hard. I hope it’s not that, obviously. Somethings not right, I know that. But I have an ultrasound tomorrow and a cystoscopy Monday so should have answers to what is going on.
    thanks for your message x

  • Hi
Yes, I'm going through this to. I had a lot of blood loss visible when weeing .kidney pain on and off. I'm on menopause so was shocked to see blood .it's hard to tell where it's coming from with us ladies. I'm in shock to .it's overwhelming the C word isn't it? I have just told my closest family not to involve too many at this stage. it's new and strange. I go from denial to fear. How do you feel? Let us know how things go. Remember it can be negative. It may be something else .Well that's what I keep saying to myself .What helps you?
