HPV Positive and High Grade Dyskaryosis: confused about smear results

Well I don't know where to start...

Routine smears started when I was 25 (2012) and carried on... I already had 2 young children by then 4 Yr old and 1 year old then my next one at 28 (2017) had another child by that time which was 3years old my next one was when I was 31 (2020 then that time I had to have 2 as the first once came back inconclusive.. the second one came back hpv positive and no abnormal cells and was on yearly ones.. 2021 same hpv no cell change 2022 same pv no cell change.. these were all in April may times so when It came round to 2023 April I was 6 months pregnant with my last baby.. had a traumatic after birth but labour and deliver was fine.. so had to wait till after I had her so at 8 weeks I had the implant put it to prevent more babies.. which was September 15th but from birthing her to implant day I bleed 5 weeks had a week break then t the first period then another week break but light spotting then another period while the implant was being put in and ever since then I've not stopped bleeding spotting bloody discharge back pain  and cramps.. extreme exhaustion which I've been putting down to the implant? So I went back to the Dr's in December of 12 weeks of constant bleeding/spotting and the rest they gave me the mini pill to help stop the bleeding.. I was booked in for my smear 2 weeks later but she did it then based on my symptoms.. I got a letter Xmas eve saying hpv positive and severe high grade dyskaryosis and me being me panicked and had a crap Christmas.. my partner seems to think I'm worrying for nothing but my mum has had this and my sister had anal cancer from the virus.. I don't understand how it can go from nothing in April 2022 to severe high grade in 18 month? Can it be a mistake? Can having a baby kick it off? I'm so confused I have my appointment in the afternoon tomorrow for the microscope.. help a mum going out of her mind :-(

  • Hello Mj873,

I am so sorry to hear that you had a bad Christmas due to the anxiety this letter triggered. What bad timing to receive that letter on Christmas eve! By now you will have had your appointment - how did it go? Try not to worry too much if you can - you've been closely monitored and you went to all your smears. Even though it can seem a bit surprising to you that it went from nothing in April 2022 to high grade dyskaryosis, this can happen but the important thing is that you were monitored regularly and you are in expert hands to have this dealt with. You can read more on our website about what it means to have abnormal cervical cells and you can also find out more about treatment if you have abnormal cervical cells. I am not sure whether having a baby could have had any effect on this - this is however a question you could ask when you have your treatment I am sure they will be able to answer your questions. I hope this will reassure you - it may be a bit frightening to get this letter and to be told you have high grade dyskaryosis but this is something that happens to so many ladies and which can be treated promptly. I hope that you will hear from others here who have been in a similar place before - to make it easier I have added the words 'HPV positive and high grade dyskaryosis' to the title of your post so that it can be spotted by others who have been through this before and there have been many!

I know this is an anxious time for you but I wanted you to know you are not alone and that I am sure you will feel better soon once you have had your treatment and can put all this behind you.

    Best wishes,
