Thyroid Cancer Concern

Hi there, my grandmother had anaplastic thyroid cancer and sadly passed away a number of years ago, my mother had papillary thyroid cancer and had her thyroid removed. I have a nodule that is not a cyst. I had it checked 5 years ago and it was 6mm, it has now grown to 9.5mm and the ultrasound is a U3. I'm due a biopsy on Friday but I've lost weight, feeling tired all the time and I suspect it's cancer. This is what was written on my ultrasound report: well defined homogeneously hypoechoic nodule within mixed internal and peripheral vascularity is seen within the right lobe.

Anyone had anything similar and has it turned out to be cancer?

Thank you

  • Hello ShivvyA,

Given your family history, you are right to get this checked thoroughly and I hope that everything goes well with the biopsy and that you won't have to wait long for the results. It's  normal to be worried but try if you can not to anticipate the worst as there are so many things it could be other than cancer which will present similar symptoms. So unfortunately it's all a bit of a waiting game for you, and that is no fun game for sure. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.  It won't be long hopefully until you get your results and I hope that it all turns out to be fine. Unfortunately no one here will have the medical expertise to tell you what the ultrasound report highlighted but I hope that you will hear from others who have had something similar and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
