Uncertainty over mums biopsy- scared it’s IBC

Hi all

I was after some advise and to see if anybody has found themselves in this position. My mum had a ct scan for something else. Something was incidentally found in mums breast which a referral to the breast clinic was made. When they mentioned it was on the same side that mum had a cyst we felt slightly better. This cyst was diagnosed 10 years ago at the breast clinic. However when we went to the appointment they said there was some skin thickening that was only noticed in scans. Mum had an ultrasound and was meant to have a mammogram but it was broken on the day so went recently for it. The person who did her ultrasound mentioned it could be a sebaceous cyst as clinically that’s how it presents they were just unsure on the skin thickening and classed the scan as borderline. They checked her lymph nodes and said they were normal. He performed a core needle biopsy. The ultrasound was scored 3/4 is that 3 for one area and 4 for the other? Or could that be overall it’s between the two. The lymph nodes were scored 2. On the sheet he put sebaceous cyst or suspicious lesion. It’s hypoechoic. When we went back to the consultant she didn’t really say much just that the concerning feature was the skin thickening. She mentioned it could be caused by infection and trauma but not sure. The apparent cyst burst a few months back and mum mentioned lots of gunk came out, it also smells awful as fluid is leaking from it. It was frustRating as was hoping for more reassurance. I’m beside myself for mum which she obviously doesn’t know and thinking it’s inflammatory breast cancer but then a rational part thinks it’s an infected cyst. Mum had no obvious clinical signs apart from the lump of her cyst. The consultant said she’ll get an appointment when they’re back but mums asked for phone call. I’m so scared. Sorry to waffle.

  • I realise this should go on pre diagnosis. How do I do this?

  • Hello Nhj91

    I've moved this post to pre-diagnosis and hopefully you will have some replies from the community soon.

  • Hello Nhj91

    I'm sorry to hear about the recent tests that your Mum has been undergoing. Understandably, you're feeling worried about what may be responsible for the findings seen on the scans and hopefully, you won't have to wait too long for the biopsy results. Did the hospital say when your Mum may hear from them?

    We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be difficult. Often it can help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses ahead of your Mum's results. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Keep in touch Nhj91 and let us know how your Mum gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi all so after a 2 1/2 week wait for mums biopsy she received the all clear today. Scar tissue and inflammation secondary to the ruptured cyst. Mammogram and ultrasound in 3 months to make sure things are clearing and so they have more images but it’s benign. Sending so much love to everybody that is waiting or has been diagnosed. Sending love and healing xx

  • HI Nhj91,

    I am delighted to hear that your mum's biopsy results gave her the all clear today. I'm sure that you are both really relieved and hope that she won't have any further problems with her breast;

    Please keep in touch and let us know how the mammogram goes. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
