Does my lump sound suspicious?

Before I start, just thought I’d say that I do have an appointment booked in the new year and just looking to hear honest responses before I go :)

Just under my jaw on my left hand side (About 2cm below my earlobe), I have a lump about half the size of a pea. On the surface layer of skin, it’s just red, however not swollen or inflamed. It’s not painful whatsoever and never has been. I noticed the lump roughly 2 months ago and didn’t think too much of it at first, but have been worrying lately as it is still here 2 months later.

It’s completely solid and is attached to the skin, so it doesn’t sound like a cyst. I have tried hot compress for a few days, just in case it is a cyst, but the lump hasn’t changed at all.

I’m totally worried as when I read the ‘when you should worry’ symptoms on Google, it lists my symptoms above.

The lump is ever so slightly raised on top of the skin, but the lump is 90% under the skin (if that makes sense).

I don’t have much education on cancer, so I don’t know what type of cancer would give you a lump on this part of your face, but I’m really hoping it’s benign and nothing to worry about. :(

Any ideas what this could be? I am so nervous to visit the doctor.

  • Most lumps turn out to be nothing, however, no one the internet over can tell you what it is or isn't. Only an in person appointment with your doctor will be able to begin the process of a diagnosis. Could be a blocked hair follicle, could be a cyst, could be anything at this point.

You won't find your answer on Google either, you'll only find "OMG, it's cancer" links because that's what google does, suggests folk have cancer at every twist and turn. Hence, why you found your way on here.

  • Thank you, I have an appointment this week but I am terrified of what they might say.
