Left Supraclavicular (Virchows) Node solid unmovable lump

Hi all!

I'm just looking for people that may have been in a similar situation, and to hear your experiences.

Im a 34 year old female. I've had a very hard (bone like) fixed lump on my collar bone (left side) for a number of years; I'd say at least 3 or 4 years, however I'd never payed much attention to it.

I have recently been hearing a pulsating whooshing sound when laying down. The lump in my collarbone seems to have an artery over the top of it so became concerned that it had grown (I'd estimate it's about the size of a grape). I've also been getting pain in my shoulder and occasional numbness in my arm. I started googling this lump which I suspect is the Virchows node (bad idea, I know) and the outcome sounds very bleak!.

I immediately contacted my GP who put me on a 2 week fast track referral for investigations with a head and neck specialist. It has been 11 days since they made the referral. The cut off date is Christmas day so I'm doubting I will hear anything before that now.

I'm absolutely terrified. I have a four year old. I feel like a can't function properly, having multiple panic attacks daily. I've completely lost my appetite and have constant tightness in my chest like I can't catch a breath. I know this is more than likely due to the anxiety I am experiencing but then I am get anxious that my lungs are being effected by whatever is going on! I've had blood tests done which have come back normal.

Has anybody else experienced similar and would be willing to share your story. Thank you for listening ️<3

  • Hello Lunapie,

You did well to contact your GP about this lump in your collarbone and it's good that they are doing the necessary investigations and I hope that you won't have to wait too long to be seen by the head and neck specialist. I am not sure whether you have had your appointment yet or if you are still waiting and I hope you will get some clarity very soon. You are right though that it is best to avoid googling anything and don't believe anything Google tells you as it will always give you the bleakest and least likely scenarios.

It's normal to be worried and to feel like you can't function properly - if you see you are struggling to cope at the moment and that you have lost your appetite, it might be worth flagging this with your GP so that they can help you deal with this anxiety you are experiencing at the moment. It's reassuring though that your blood tests have come back normal.

The wait for test results can be a lengthy process and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. Try if you can to keep busy and distracted especially during this festive period taking part in activities you enjoy and staying well away from Dr Google. It won't be long now until you find out more and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

Hopefully others who have been through something similar before and had a similar left supraclavicular unmoveable lump will come along shortly and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
