Abnormal smear - HPV and high grade (severe) dyskaryosis

Hi all,

Would love a little support and reassurance before the holidays as this has really knocked me and I don’t know who to turn to without worrying them.

I’m 28, no kids, been in a long term relationship with my partner of 7 years. I’ve been on the contraceptive pill since I was about 15 and I am usually in fighting fit health (eat well, work out etc.).

3 years ago at 25 I had my first Pap smear and everything came back negative and clear. 3 years later I had it again a few weeks ago and it has come back HPV positive with high grade (severe) dyskaryosis.

They rang me this week to try and book me in for a colposcopy next week but unfortunately I am due to fly abroad for Christmas so could only get one booked in for straight after the new year.

I’m so incredibly worried and this has put a massive negative cloud over the whole festive period and I’m not sure how I am supposed to enjoy my Time with family and friends.

  • Hello Iwanttorunaway,

Try to enjoy the festive period and spend time with family and friends - I know it's easier said than done but make the most of your time abroad this Christmas and it won't be long now until your colposcopy. You are in very good hands and I am sure this will be sorted on your return so try to just put your worries aside if you can. There is information on our website on what abnormal cervical cells are which I hope will reassure you as well as on treatment if you have abnormal cervical cells. Learn more too about what happens after your treatment for abnormal cervical cells. It is worth bearing in mind that an abnormal cervical screening test result means that you have changes in the cells covering the neck of your womb (cervix) but these changes are not cancer but the treatment is successful in ensuring that these changes do not develop into cancer in the future. So it is important to have this treatment and deal with this but it will all be sorted - this is something that so many ladies on the forum have been through before and I hope that they will be along shortly to share their treatment/colposcopy experiences with you.

Have a wonderful Christmas with family and friends and don't let this negative cloud hanging over your head spoil the festive fun you are having abroad. The important thing is that you have this appointment booked for just after the new year and rest assured that it will all be dealt with very soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Iwanttorunaway,

I just wanted to drop by to reassure you, when I was in my late 20's I was in the situation that you are in now.  My smear test indicated that I had abnormal cells, cin3, which was very worrying.  This was before HPV testing, but I would imagine that I had it, just did not know.  I went for my colposcopy and they removed the abnormal cells by LLETZ, that was the only treatment that I needed.  I am now in my mid 50's and never had any problems since.  Fingers crossed as you are fit and healthy, you should hopefully clear the hpv virus soon, which will help reduce your risk of this happening again.

Try not to worry too much, this is very common and easily sorted out.

    Regards

    Annie
