Colonoscopy

My mum (70) had a colonoscopy last week following a sudden call up from a routine sample collection. She has had no symptoms at all.

During the procedure the surgeon removed 12 polyps and biopsied a larger growth near the anus. At the time they said they suspected it might be cancerous.

She has been called back by the hospital today for an MRI and abdominal scan.

Of course we are all worried. I would like to know why the MRI and abdominal scan might be needed in this situation, especially as we don’t have the biopsy results back yet. During the scans will my mother be told what a diagnosis might be right away? Or, if  not, will it be soon if it is bad news?

If she does have cancer, what is the treatment?

  • Hi sherridog,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand it is difficult when waiting for answers and dealing with this kind of uncertainty.

It's difficult for anyone not involved in her care to advise on this. The scan will be for them to get further information and may be precautionary, but as I say it's not easy to say exactly why. Regarding finding out further information, usually the individual is told how long to expect to wait to hear back - this is typically around 2-3 weeks, but can be longer.

It would be worth asking these questions at the appointment if you can.

If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses at all, you are welcome to give them a call on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,
