Scared about my jawline lump

Hi all I have posted here before

I have a very hard, non movable weird shape lump on my right mandible right next to my chin It can’t be seen but can be felt I was lucky my son hit me there with his head or I would have had no idea

My doctor referred to it as a bony lesion and yesterday I had a x ray the lady felt it and was like ‘oh wow that is boney’ and said ‘your doctor will write to you’ rather then ‘they might’ is this any reason for concern? Sorry if it’s a silly question
Also they said it could take 4 weeks! My doctor assured me 2/3 times on the phone that it was an urgent referral but when I booked the ultrasound for next week they told me it was ‘routine’ should I call up my doctors or the department again and explain my concerns around this?

my doctor put it as urgent because I also have a sore throat/ occasional tongue numbness and lack of appetite and really low folate (idk if that’s related but she noted it)

  • if anybody replies don’t worry about the last part I called my doctors today who are getting it changed to urgent

  • Hello WitchyTaco,

I am glad the doctor is getting it changed to urgent - you did well to call them today and I hope you won't have to wait long now to be seen. You also did the right thing in flagging this lump as soon as you noticed it but don't be alarmed by the fact she said the doctor "will" write to you rather than "might" - this is probably just the standard procedure that the doctor writes down the results so try not to worry about that too much. It's normal to be anxious when waiting for definite answers but it won't be long now until you get some clarity on this.  As you are waiting, there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope during this stressful time. Try if you can not to look anything up on Google as this will only give you the least likely possibilities and will only make you more anxious.

I hope that other members of our community who have had a similar lump before in a similar place will see your post and share their experience with you. It's good you mentioned these additional symptoms, the sore throat and occasional tongue numbness and lack of appetite - whether this is related or not, it's something the doctor will want to know so it's a good idea to give them all the information regarding your symptoms.

Keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing concern and that you find out more very soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there Thankyou sadly they can’t unless they do a new refferal and my ultrasound is Thursday so I’ll just wait and I’m sure if the person doing it has a concern it will be sped up but no x ray results at all yet

Thankyou, strangely google helped as i am 27 and it’s very rare at my age to happen anext I learned many tumours can be benign on the jaw - my doctors worried me more as they think it might be malignant because of how hard it is and it feels fixed to my jaw and can’t be moved at al  but I am staying positive still

Thankyoi hopefully it all turns out okay

  • Hi there - I just wanted to wish you luck for tomorrow.  I'll have everything crossed for a positive outcome for you! xxx

  • Thank you so much! I’ll update once I know more they have not even looked at my x ray yet or if they have then they are waiting for the ultrasound to tell me anything Xxx

  • Hi there so still don’t know a lot, he thinks it might be a bony prominence but isn’t sure so he wants me to have a MRI which is a little worrying still but an MRI should tell them a lot more information about the lump x

  • Oh hope you get your MRI soon - glad they are being thorough.  My ultrasound picked up that my lump was suspicious so it sounds hopeful to me  xx
