Just had a call from the Dr’s.

I had stomach ache and what felt like colic on the 2nd December, throughout the early hours I had Diarrhoea about 6 times. I checked my stool about 11am and found fresh blood. On the phone to 111. Off to A&A, blood test all ok, rectum examination ok. Was told it was gastroenteritis. As my bowel improved I noticed streaks of blood. Phoned doctor and FIT was done. Phone call today for referral. NHS App says suspected colorectal cancer. Shocked or what. Managed to stop shaking to write this. As I was still showing blood, would this not have swayed the FIT. No blood showing at all now. Bowel movements nearly back to normal. Bit of bloating.

I know a check is imperative but worried sick and anxiety levels off the scale!

Any words will help me.

Thank you.

  • I think if the FIT is positive, they will say "suspected cancer." It doesn't mean it's likely at all, just that they have to check to rule it out. I think that was on my referral and I was told it was a less than 1% chance (and it turned out to be hemorrhoids, as we all thought). I think "suspected cancer" is just kind of a code for "we want this done quickly as cancer is one of the many possibilities to be ruled out."

  • Thank you Margaret. It was reading it on the NHS app 2 minutes after the Dr had phoned and said we need to check. You have eased my mind, although it will be more eased if it was just gastroenteritis. Thank you once again for your words. Dean
