  • Hi, I can’t help with practical knowledge as I’m waiting on a colonoscopy referral (urgent) but saw you were here and scared & wanted to say you are not alone in that.
Have you managed to speak to anyone since you posted? Maybe one of the cancer nurses on this site? There’s a freephone number to call.
Good luck - and I won’t say don’t worry, but try to find happy things to do x

  • Hi Mai5y,

As Katbear has said, this might be best raised with the nurses either by raising a query under the Ask a Nurse topic, or by phoning the helpline.

Try not to be scared, over 90 of referrals don’t end with a cancer diagnosis and the first appointment is almost always an anticlimax. Write down any questions you’d like to ask, take a pen and paper with you to write down the answers and feel free to take a friend or family member with you. When patients are stressed we typically forget 60% of what we’ve been told.

I can’t guarantee this will happen in your case, but the first appointment is normally to talk you through the reason for your referral, some basic physical checks to get an idea of your general fitness and what treatments you would be able to safely be given and a detailed discussion about your past medical history and the symptoms you are presenting with. Next steps will probably be discussed such as arranging to have any of the following will be discussed endoscopy, MRI scan, an ultrasound scan, blood tests, biopsies etc. along with likely waiting times for these. Once diagnostic tests have been done (assuming they haven’t already been done) you should receive a diagnosis, a prognosis and a discussion about your treatment preferences at  alter meeting.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck for Saturday!
    Dave
