Breast Lump and pain

Hey, I have been having like a burning sensation on my right nipple and while doing an inspection have found a lump that definitely wasn't there before. I am going to contact my drs on Monday morning to get checked over. Will they refer me to the breast clinic, I have previously been before around 10 years ago due to a lump in my other breast. I was wondering will they refer me again and roughly how long is waiting list for Northern Ireland?

  • Hi Lee,

I am sorry to hear about your latest finding. It would be wise to get this checked out by your GP. If your GP suspects that there could possibly be anything untoward, you will be referred to the breast clinic. I am not too sure what the waiting times are in Northern Ireland. Most of us are referred under the "urgent" pathway.  This means that we should get a date for an appointment within 2 weeks from the date of referral, although in busy areas, we may have to wait a little longer for the actual appointment. Having been to the breast clinic previously, you will know what an anxious and stressful time this is. Try to keep yourself occupied to help keep your mind off the wait. It is a fact that only 20% of those referred to the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes.

Here's hoping that your symptoms are nothing serious.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindregards,
