Anxiety through the roof!

Hi. My anxiety has been through the roof! I went to my GP today as I have had bloody nipple discharge 3x in last 6 weeks and noticed a small lump just above my nipple. I've not been sleeping since finding the lump and now my Dr. has referred me for an urgent referral - breast cancer suspected. Im only 30 years old and have a young daughter so my anxiety is crippling me. I've had a look at the wait times for my local hospital and i cant work out if it will be in 2 weeks or 12! I've had a read of signs and symptoms and haven't seen much about people having bloody nipple discharge. Has anyone experienced discharge as well as a lump? Could it be something else other than Cancer? What actually happens at the breast clinic for a 30 year old? I've read online that under 35s don't have a mammogram? Will they do an ultrasound and a biopsy? Im sorry for all the questions but just trying to get my head around it all and trying to stop panicking.

Thanks in advance

  • Hello,

I was diagnosed with breast cancer this year aged 35. I didn’t have the discharge you’re having so fingers crossed that is down to something other than cancer. I’ll keep everything crossed for you.
I did have to have a mammogram as a bit of a box ticking exercise. The consultant said there isn’t really a lot of point as pre-menopausal breast tissue is too dense to really show a good image. Once they actually looked at the mammogram, it didn’t even show my cancer even though I was already diagnosed and they knew exactly where it was!! So in my personal experience they are pointless for younger women. You may still have to have one just so they can have it on file for you if that makes sense. But I found it completely painless and absolutely fine and I’m a squeamish and hate hospitals!
    How are you doing?

Hope you’re ok and I know how you’re feeling but you will be ok no matter what xx

  • Hi GBYorks22,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear of your symptoms, but you have done the right thing by getting these investigated. It is normal to get an urgent referral for the breast clinic- most of us get one, so don't worry about this. Urgent means that you should get your appointment within 2 weeks from the date of referral, although you may have to wait for a little longer than this in some busy areas.

You will first of all have a discussion about your symptoms with a consultant and then an examination of your breasts. You may then have an ultrasound and a biopsy. As Rolo says, You may also get a mammogram, but this doesn't always happen with younger people. If you have a biopsy, you will then have to wait for 1-2 weeks to get the results back. This is always an anxious time and you'll probably find that your emotions are all over the place. Try to stay away from Google, as it aims at the more spectacular cases, which won't apply to you, won't give you any answers and will scare you even further.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Here's hoping that nothing untoward is found.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi both.

Thank you so much for your responses. They have really out me at ease. I think I was in just pure panic mode. Sleep slightly better last night but still not great.

Role I hope you are ok. Im so sorry to hear about your diagnosis :( I'm trying not to think too much about it. I'm going to see my friend tonight to have a catch up and watch some TV to try keep me distracted. So hopefully that will help.

Jol - thank you. I think that's where I went wrong and panicked myself. I've been on Google all week looking at different symptoms and different types of cancer. I'll try keep off Google from now.

Thank you both again. You really have put my mind at ease and I know more about what to expect at the appointment

I will let you know how I get on xxx

  • Hi  did you get an appointment through xx

  • Hi Kris. Sorry I've had a whirlwind of a few weeks. Yes appointment has come through its Friday 15th so booked within a fee weeks. Just a waiting game now but feeling more at ease now it's come thro h. Thinking I'll receive my results the week before Xmas so hopefully it will be good news *fingers crossed* x

  • Hi GByorks,

I am glad to see that your appointment has come through for 15th and hope that it goes well. I suspect that you are feeling a little calmer, now that you have stopped Googling - or have you? - it's a terrible temptation!

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine,

I have stopped googling. I think speaking to my husband and my friend has helped me loads :)

It's a really hard temptation to stop googling but I'm managing to keep myself distracted as best I can until the results.

Will let you know how I get on and honestly thank you for your support

  • Hi GBYorks,

I am glad to hear that you are managing to avoid the temptation to Google, as it's not easy to do this. It does help to talk to someone, as well as to write things down.

    We're always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Went to the appointment last Friday. All went well. They didn't see anything alarming on the ultra sound thankfully! It looks like one of my ducts is wider than it should be, which has caused my symptoms. Possibly need an op to have it removed. Have a follow up appointment in January!

Just wanted to say Thank you for your support and keeping me calm :) Merry Christmas! xx

  • Hi GBYorks,

Thankyou for the update. I am delighted to hear that nothing untoward was found on the ultrasound. It is reassuring to hear that you have a follow up appointment in January. Even if you do need an operation, this must be a great relief for you. I hope that this means that you can now relax and enjoy your Christmas with your husband and daughter. These are precious years with a young family and you never get them back again, so enjoy and have a Very Happy Christmas.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on in January. Remember, that we are always here for you.

    Kindregards,

    Jolamine xx
