Worried sick about bowel cancer

I am worried about my dad. He had a virtual colonoscopy which showed appendicitis but the consultant has said he would like to do a normal colonoscopy to check for pathology in the caecum as my dad has ongoing inflammation. I’m really scared. Would his virtual colonoscopy have shown any tumoris or polyps. Has anyone had on going inflammation and not been cancerous. This has been going on since July.

  • Hello Maacho11,

Virtual colonoscopies are reliable diagnostic tools which will also look for polyps in the large bowel and rectum. Our website has useful information about the virtual colonoscopy which is also called a CT colonography and if you have any questions you can also contact the Cancer Research UK nurses on a freephone number 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9am to 5pm, from Monday to Friday. It sounds like the consultant is being very thorough which is a good thing and perhaps the colonoscopy will allow to look at the caecum more closely. You can find out more about the colonoscopy on this page. It's normal to be worried about cancer especially as this has been going on since July but there are many other conditions which could explain this inflammation and it sounds like appendicitis may have been detected and it's now just a matter of getting an accurate and full diagnosis which may take a little bit of time but your dad is definitely having all the right tests for this so it won't be long now until you have definite answers.

Waiting for results is always a very anxious time and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have had these tests before and had similar inflammation to your dad and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
