Breast Cancer scare

A month or so ago I noticed one of my nipples was occasionally flat or inverted. It popped back out when I was cold or if I poked it. I then noticed a lump so make a GP appointment  my GP wasn’t concerned about the lump but due to my age (51) referred me to the Breast Clinic on a 2ww pathway. Unfortunately in my area it’s a 3 week wait and I have my appointment on the 28th. I checked my breast today and the lump seems to have disappeared but I still have the inverted nipple, although  it still seems  to come and go. If it was cancer would it still pop out and stay out or would it stay inverted all of the time?

  • I am sorry you are having to wait this long. I am having to wait till the 5th of December. Its always a positive if the lump is shrinking in my opinion as it may be hormonal. Hope you are doing well.

  • Hi Tommy,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am not a doctor, so unfortunately, I cannot answer your question. You have done the right thing by getting this investigated and your GP has rightly referred you to the breast clinic. As Sarah has already said, it is good news that your lump seems to have disappeared and also that the inverted nipple seems to come and go.

It is a fact that not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or due to fibrous or hormonal changes. Only 20% of people, who are referred to the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still good for you. This is always a worrying wait, as our over-active imaginations take us to all sorts of dark places. Try to keep yourself busy, whether with work or a hobby, to help the time too pass.

I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found at your clinic visit.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Just to update, I attended the Breast clinic on Tuesday and after a thorough examination, a mammogram and an ultrasound I was given the all clear. The inverted nipple is caused by duct ectasia and the lumpy area and indentation is just natural aging. Just wanted to post a positive story in the hope that it gives positivity and hope to others during what is a very stressful and worrying time.

  • Hi Tommy,

Thank you for your update. I am delighted to hear that you got the all clear. We always like to hear positive stories on this site and they are a great help to those who are anxiously waiting to be seen, or to get the results of tests. I am sure that you must feel incredibly relieved to be one of the lucky ones and I sincerely hope that you will remain so for the foreseeable future.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Sarah, I saw from another post that you got good news from your hospital appointment. I’m so pleased you were able to bring the appointment forward as the waiting is the worst part. I also got the all clear thankfully. It’s good to read good news stories as when I was waiting for my appointment any positive posts gave me hope.
