Liver Cancer? Waiting for MRI results

After losing 20% of my body weight in six months without doing anything my GP arranged for a CT scan from my neck to my pelvis. I had the scan on a Thursday at midday and on the Friday afterwards at midday my GP rang me and told me a 4 cm mass had been found

He said he would refer me for an MRI as the MRI would be able to tell what it is, I had the MRI on Sunday, when will I get my results? Today is Monday and I thought if it was really bad news I would get a phone call today, with the NHS in such a mess at the moment, and from my own experience, you tend to get results very quickly for bad things and don’t really hear anything if everything is fine.

Just looking for other peoples experiences with a situation like this and how long they had to wait for their MRI results, and whether they were good or bad.

  • Hello Eanj,

I think as you had the MRI on Sunday, it may have been a little bit too early to already get the results on Monday whatever these results might have been. There may be variations depending on where you live but according to our information page on the MRI scan, you should get your results within 1 to 2 weeks.

Waiting for results can make you anxious so if you feel really nervous, get in touch with your doctor or nurse to double check how long it will take to get these results. If you haven't heard anything back after a couple of weeks, make sure you contact the doctor who arranged the test and ask for an update on how long your results might take.

I've also slightly edited the title of your post to include the words 'waiting for MRI results' so that it can be seen very quickly by other members of our community who have had an MRI scan before and have been in a similar position and will remember how long they had to wait for their results.

While you are waiting, I thought I would also share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get your results soon and that it turns out to be reassuring news.

    Best wishes,
