Blood/mucus on stool

Hi everyone. I’m 37 years old. My uncle was diagnosed at 40 years old with CC and always told me to be proactive if I ever see any blood in my stool, so that’s what I’m doing.

About 10 days ago I went for a bowel movement with was very loose. After I finished I noticed some thick red mucus on the side of the toilet bowel. My anxiety kicked in. Since then I have had a few bowel movements where the stool has streaks of bright red blood on, and other times I’ve had red mucus on my stools.

Other  symptoms are sharp pains on the right and left side of my lower colon, stools seems to be mixed with constipation and mushy stool. Lots more gas, and sometimes a full feeling in my rectum.

Yes, I do have piles but, and I hate to admit this, I have inserted my digital finger into my rectum (gloves) to check if I can feel anything internally, to which I can’t and there was no blood on my finger - so I’m unsure how it could be piles causing the blood and mucus.

I’ve spoken to a nurse. I have a FIT test and a stool test which tests for inflammation. I did them both today, but frustratingly my doctors do not have a pick up until Monday now, so will have to re-do the test. It’s frustrating because the sample I took today had blood and mucus on so would have gotten me the colonoscopy.

If the FIT test comes back positive for blood, the nurse said she will send me for a colonoscopy. If it’s negative she wants to exam my rectum. If it comes back negative I think I’m going to push for a colonoscopy, due to my uncle having cancer at a young age.

I must admit, I am very worried at the moment.

I know no one here can diagnose me, but I guess I’m just looking to talk to others who’ve been through this worry or are currently going through it.

All I can think is I have CC and nothing else.

  • Hello Matthew861,

I am sorry to hear about your uncle and he certainly has given you good advice - it's a good idea to go and see a doctor if you notice any blood in your stool. It's a shame you are having to redo the FIT test and I hope you can get it done on Monday and that you will have all the tests you need to get clarity and find out what is causing these symptoms. It's normal to be worried and it's now all a waiting game when the stress and anxiety can be at an all time high. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope as you are waiting for important news.

No one here will indeed be able to diagnose you and it's best while you are waiting to keep well away from the temptation to look things up on Google as this will only make you feel more worried and will not provide any answers; there are so many different bowel conditions which can explain your symptoms but you can trust the experts to give you an accurate diagnosis. Try if you can not to anticipate the worst and least likely scenario.

We have had many members on our forum with similar symptoms who I am sure will relate to what you are currently going through and will be happy to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,
