  • Hello anita54

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some unusual bleeding over the past 6 months. It's good to know that you've already seen your GP and some investigations have been carried out.

It's understandable that you're feeling worried about the results of your scan. I presume that your GP has now referred you to the gynaecology team for further investigations? Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for that appointment.

In the meantime, you might find it helpful to chat through your concerns with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to offer some advice and support. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • For anyone else with the same situation, to give some positivity.

I wanted to come back and update this because I know how frightening it is to find these old threads with no outcome.

My wife (40) had prolonged heavy bleeding and an ultrasound that reported an endometrial thickness close to 30 mm. Like many people here, we immediately feared the worst. We spent weeks waiting for appointments and biopsy results, and the uncertainty was honestly the hardest part.

She was referred to a gynecologist and had a hysteroscopy with an endometrial biopsy. During the hysteroscopy, the doctor said the uterine cavity looked normal overall, removed a small possible polyp, took biopsies, and inserted a Mirena coil.

The biopsy results came back as benign endometrial tissue with no evidence of malignancy. The report also stated there was no atypia (no precancerous changes), and she was discharged from the suspected cancer pathway.

In our case, despite an ultrasound measurement close to 30 mm, the cause was not cancer. The Mirena was left in place to help control the bleeding.

I know reading a number like 20–30 mm can be terrifying. It absolutely deserves proper investigation, but our experience taught us that a thickened endometrium is not the same thing as a cancer diagnosis. Fibroids, polyps, hormonal changes and other benign conditions can also contribute, and only a biopsy can tell the difference.

If you’ve just received a similar ultrasound result and are waiting, try not to assume the worst while also making sure you get the recommended follow-up. If you haven’t already been referred for further assessment (such as hysteroscopy and/or biopsy when appropriate), contact your GP or gynecology team to make sure that follow-up is arranged.

I promised myself that if our outcome was good, I would come back and post it. I hope this gives someone else a little hope while they’re waiting for answers.
