Possible Bile duct cancer

I have been ill since April, when I was hospitalised with gallbladder problems. They found something growing in the bile duct when they did an ERCP.  I got necrotising pancreatitis from the procedure and was in hospital for 3.5 weeks, then was the battle to get a Spyglass endoscopy to take a biopsy which has to be done at a different hospital in the next county.  That was done on 6 October.  I can't get anyone to tell me the results, all I know is there is a soft tumour inside which is being held from blocking the duct by the stent they put in, in April, changed it this time.  They say they can't give me the results until after yet another CT scan with contrast which is on Monday.  Then only a doctor can tell me ... I'm getting quite concerned.  I was hospitalised again for a week in September with another infection of the gallbladder as the stent is slightly blocking the exit of it.  Blood tests are not brilliant, as kidneys are suffering too.  I have also lost over 5 stone in 6 months and I'm not trying to, it's still coming off too.

Is it usual to wait so long for a diagnosis?

I'm a female in my early 60's

  • Hi GrandmaJ,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear of all that you've been through.

I am glad to hear that your CT with contrast is due on Monday, so hope that you'll get some answers after that.

I had a 3" gallstone, which blocked my gallbladder and caused empyema. At the time, my consultant wasn't sure that I'd pull through. I was put on to IV antibiotics for 2 weeks, to reduce the infection prior to surgery. When I went for my operation, I stopped breathing on the table, before any surgery could be carried out. I then had another 2 weeks on IV antibiotics before they tried again. Fortunately, they were successful that time. Because of the size of the stone, they had to do a full open cholecystectomy - no keyhole surgery for me. I lost 5 stone in 3 weeks, but put it back on as soon as I began to recover. I was in hospital for nearly 3 months. That was 26 years ago now and I still lead a busy life, despite since having had 2 bouts of breast cancer.

Biopsies take longer to come back in some areas than others, but I would expect yours to be back soon. Why don't you phone up your consultant's secretary and ask whether or not they are back yet? Sometimes the delay is for the meeting, which your care team hold to discuss your results and what they are going to do about them. This is called a MDT meeting (Multidisciplinary team). They are usually held about every week and you won't usually get your results until after this has been held.

Waiting for results is always a worrying time. Irrespective of the results, it is always a relief when you actually know exactly what you are dealing with. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I shall be thinking of you on Monday and keeping my fingers crossed.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
