Breast exam 2WW

When you go for the breast exam to the breast clinc, do you get the results on the same day or a letter to your home?

How does it all work as it’s my first time

  • Hi S3ner,

When I had my appointment, I was called back about 2 weeks later to get the results from the consultant. Having said that, I did get a diagnosis- maybe they wouldn’t have called me in if it had been good news- I’m sure someone else who had a better outcome will be able to advise you.

The usual tests and scans are a mammogram and ultrasound, and then if the ultrasound shows something suspicious, you’ll probably also have a biopsy. Everyone I saw was really lovely- kind and empathetic. And they didn’t mind that I cried!!

    Good luck xx

  • Hi S3ner,

It usually takes about 2 weeks from the date of referral to get your appointment at the breast clinic.  As GoonerGirl has mentioned, these are the 3 main tests. I don't know what age you are, but younger women tend to have denser breasts, which do not show up well on a mammogram, so this is not usually carried out in the under 40ies. A lot will depend upon what your care team see on ultrasound, as to when you will get your results.

Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, or due to fibrous or hormonal changes. If this turns out to be the case, you may be told straight away.  If there is a need for a biopsy, you will probably have to wait 1-2 weeks to get the results. It is always worth asking when they expect the results to be back, before you leave the consultation, as it can be a nerve racking wait, if you don't know when to expect them.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kindregards,

    Jolamine xx
