Can't stop crying

Breast clinic appointment last Friday: 2x mammograms, ultrasound, 6x biopsies. Mammograms found nothing. I insisted and ultrasound found 2x 1cm lumps. I was told they are 95% sure it is breast cancer but I have to wait 2 weeks for results! I can't stop crying and my mind keeps catastrophising. I amnot sure they should have told me without being 100% as I can't do anything until they know. I am in despair.

  • Hi TCP1903,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry that you find yourself in this unenviable situation. Mammograms can occasionally miss some types of cancer, so I am glad to hear that you insisted on the ultrasound. Don't worry about crying so much - releasing those tears is a great way of reducing stress. This is possibly the most worrying time of a cancer journey. At this stage, we all give rein to our over-active imaginations and this can take us to some very dark places. Fortunately, this is seldom as bleak as it seems. Irrespective of the outcome, you will feel better once you know exactly what you are dealing with.

Are you aware that not all lumps are cancerous? Many turn out to be benign cysts or due to fibrous or hormonal changes. In fact, 80% of all the people who attend the breast clinic, don't get a cancer diagnosis. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer and on both occasions, I was told at my first appointments, that they were likely cancer. This gives us a little more time to come to terms with a possible cancer diagnosis, rather than facing it head on, when we attend for our results. Have you got an appointment date for your results, or did they say how long they might be?

I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • They didn't give me an appointment date. They just said '2 weeks'.

  • Good luck for your appointment today. I felt much calmer after getting my results even though mine weren’t what I wanted to hear!

  • Lobular in one and ductal in the other lump. I am in bits but reassured by the Consultant that it is treatable.

  • Hi Tracey,

I am sorry to hear this. Did they say what stage the cancers are? It will take some time for this to sink in. Did you discuss surgery or further treatment? Both are certainly treatable and you will get through this.

I'm always here, if you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • They said they are grade 2 and that has nothing to do with the stage. They didn't say what stage. I have to have an MRI then another consultation then surgery to remove the lumps. Even though they said my lymph node looked clear they said they will take some of them too.

    A lot to process.

Consultant was reassuring and nurse was lovely.

Want to speed up time now.

    Xxxx

  • HI Tracey,

Sorry, I meant to say grade - you won't get the stage until your post-surgical pathology test. There are many people on this forum, who have had grade 2 cancers removed and are doing well after surgery. I am glad to hear that your lymph nodes look clear. They usually take a few away at the time of surgery. The test they do on these is more specific, than the one they do at the time of a biopsy. I had 6 removed and fortunately, all were clear. This is a good sign that the cancer hasn't spread, so hold on to that.

Have they said when you will get your MRI? This will give a clearer picture of your breast and help your surgeon to know exactly how much tissue needs to be removed.

This is a lot to process, but you can do it. I am glad to hear that both your consultant and your nurse were reassuring. It is always helpful when you can place your trust in your care team

It is only natural that you are all ready to go full steam ahead, as soon as possible, but you'll just have to be patient.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • They said the MRI will be in the next week or so.  Like you said, I'll know more after that.

I will try yo be a patient patient.... no option really *smile*

Thank you for being there xx

  • HI Tracey,

It's never easy to be a patient patient, especially when we'd just like to start yesterday. I hope that the MRI comes through quickly, then you should be good to go.

    Always here for you.

  • Still on the emotional rollercoaster. Had the op at the beginning of December. Now waiting for results of a test which will tell me how likely it us to return and determine what treatment I will have. Low score = radiotherapy + letrozole. High score = chemo + radio + letrozole.

Trying to stay positive but have negative moments which scare me.

    Xx

  • Hi Tracey,

I am glad to hear that your operation is behind you and I hope that you are recovering well.

Were you told when your test results should be back? Here's hoping that they come down on the side of radiotherapy + Letrozole. This state of not knowing is torture. It may seem strange to you, but you'll feel better, once you know exactly what you are dealing with and have a treatment plan mapped out.

Don't worry about crying a lot. This is a great stress reliever, so will be helping you at the moment. We all have our negative moments - it's how you get through them, that matters.

Please keep in touch and let us know what your results are? We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you, Jolamine, voice of reason as always which is appreciated.

I have an appointment for 9th Feb booked in the hope that the results will be back. Fingers crossed for a low score.

I know consultants have a job to do, however, she has made me feel like this us my fault because I am overweight. She made me feel really bad about myself which has contributed to the massive downward dive in my emotions. She has refused to even up my breasts until I lose a significant amount of weight. The nurse was lovely though and is making me an appointment for a free bra and a prosthetic.

As you say, once I know the treatment plan, I will feel better.

I am sure the fear of it returning will never go away but may reduce over time.

You are an inspiration, Jolamine, thank you.

    T xx
