It sounds as if Google has done its' usual trick and scared the living daylights out of you. It is hard to resist consulting Dr Google, but it never does anyone any good and we always advise against it. You should get a date for the breast clinic within 2 weeks, from the date of referral. It would be unusual, although sadly, not impossible, for you to get a cancer diagnosis, due to your age. It is also a fact that 80% of people who attend the breast clinic, do not get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are in your favour. It is reassuring that your GP couldn't find any lumps, but that she has referred you, just to make certain that she hasn't missed anything.

You will find that the staff at these clinics are all very helpful and understand our worries. You will most likely see the consultant first, who will talk to you about your symptoms and give you a physical examination of your breasts. You may then be sent for an ultrasound. This is a totally painless procedure and is the same as that used to monitor babies during pregnancy. If anything is found, you may then have a biopsy.  It usually takes another 1-2 weeks for the results of this to be returned and this is what decides whether or not there is any cancer present. Older women would be likely to have a mammogram first of all, but younger women usually have denser breasts, which don't always show up well with this, so you are unlikely to have one of these. 

This is always an anxious wait. Try to find something to keep you busy in the meantime, as this helps the time to pass. Do you have any hobbies or interests that you can get involved in?

Hi jolamine! Thank you so much for your reply! Your kind words have definitely put my mind slightly at ease. 

I’ve been told lots of times by family friends and my partner STOP googling but like you said it’s resisting going to Dr Google. I have received my appointment for my ultrasound which is this coming Wednesday. I’m still anxious about it and I’m taking my mum with me to try and ease my anxiety. 

im hoping all goes okay and they don’t find anything.

It's at my local hospital but says "breast clinic" on the letter so I'm not sure. I'll definitely be taking my mum in with me though as knowing me I'll forget everything they say on the way out.

I'm glad to hear that it is the breast clinic, as they should be able to carry out any tests that are needed, without the delay of referring you from one clinic to another. If they don't give you the results straight away, make sure to ask them when they expect the results to be back, as it is helpful to be able to count down the days to their return.

Hi Jolamine 

Had my appointment yesterday and got the all clear!!! The ladies at the breast clinic were all so lovely, brilliant and thorough. 

I went in for my appointment and had a chat with the consultant about my worries and why I was there and she then explained that she would examine me and if needed I would then go for an ultrasound.

She examined my breasts and confirmed what the GP had said that she couldn't feel any lumps or.bumps but could see the indent I was talking about. She then said I don't see anything I'm concerned about but for your own peace of mind I will send you for an ultrasound just to be sure. She then circled the area and I went and waited back in the waiting area.

I then went into another room and had my ultrasound where the sonographer the did the scan and reassured me that she couldn't see anything and it was just all normal breast tissue. I then had to wait to see the consultant again for the results and she said the same that it was all normal breast tissue on the scan so was all good news. She said any other changes or concerns do Contact my GB again. 

I'm honestly happy and relieved.
