2ww digital dermatology

Hi,

I went to my GP beginning of the month as have a mole that is very itchy & has changed shape. She seemed to think it wasn’t anything serious but at the same time didn’t really sound very convincing. Took some photos which she then advised mine I sent her were better and I then had to help her take the images!
We didn’t discuss anything she just said that she would refer me to the dermatology department & that I’ll hear back at some point. Didn’t discuss the process etc just said they’ll contact you & out the door I went.
3 days later I was on the nhs app and I noticed I had a referral showing & an appointment had been made for today but not a face to face. (2ww digital dermatology melanoma - not for patient attendance)

So I’m just wondering how long it normally takes to hear back. Assuming the images I/we took were ok how long do we wait to hear back if it’s nothing to worry about or if further action is needed?
im trying to not think about the mole but it’s so itchy & scabbing over that it’s a bit of a pain. I have googled to try and find info out but I have nothing. So I’m left wondering if they’ve actually viewed the images yet or am I waiting for some correspondence if so how long are we left waiting!

anyone have any info (completely aware different areas of the country will have different waiting times…just curious of the process)

thanks

  • Hello Loki10

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some concerns about a mole recently which has led to a referral to be reviewed by the dermatology team. It does sound like you've been left a little in the dark about the process and what the next steps might be.

We know that many people across the UK are experiencing some delays in accessing dermatology assessments so I certainly don't think there's any issue with giving the department a call to clarify what will happen now your referral has been received and how long you may be waiting for some news. Hopefully it won't be too long.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Loki10,

I'm assuming you had your appointment yesterday and that it was by telephone? You may have more information now you've spoken to them but if you are confused as to what is happening please update us with the outcome of the appointment & I may be able to give you an idea as to what will happen next.

  • Hi,

no the appointment wasn’t fact to face so all I know is they set a time for 9:30am 18/10 but I have no other info. No idea if the images were looked at yet or if I’m now in a queue to be looked at.

  • Hi,

thanks for the reply. I do feel like it was a rushed appointment so I’m hoping I’ll hear something soon if not I’m going to try and ring them to clarify

  • The doctor said they’ll view the images and somebody will contact me. That was it.

I’ve phoned the dermatology department before they finished for the day and spoke to a lovely lady who said that an appointment was made but not face to face or over the phone …the doctor looks at the images and then at some point over the next week they write up all their notes and then a letter will be sent. So no info on my file yet and I just need to wait, told me to call back next Friday if I’ve not heard.

  • Not helpful to you at all. I hope you hear from them soon and you know what's happening.
