HPV & CIN 2

Hi

I had a smear march last year and it said high risk hpv and no abnormal cells, I had another smear on 31st July this year which said high risk hpv and high grade moderate cell changes so I was booked in for a colposcopy 2 days later due to cancellation. I had the colposcopy and they said no abnormal cells have been seen so a biopsy couldn’t be taken, they said my cervix looks health so they will discuss my case at a disciplinary meeting on the 28th September, I heard back on the 29th saying 2 doctors reexamined my smear sample and recommend treatment with a leep instead of downgrading to cin 1. I have obviously been googling like mad and heard when some people have had the leep they find cancer or adenocarcinoma. I am worried about the leep as they offered either local or general. I suffer bad anxiety and mental health issues so have opted for general. So worried my results will show cancer, how common is cancer found after a leep? Nurse said cervix is very health.

  • Hello Lisa_91

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some recent conflicting information regarding your cervical screening results and that consequently, the MDT has now referred you for a LEEP/LLETZ procedure. It's understandable that you have concerns and questions.

We know that many people find this period of uncertainty difficult to navigate and often they will turn to the internet for information. Unfortunately what happens most often is that they are left feeling even more worried and still with no certain answers about their situation. Please do try to avoid searching Google for answers. Often what can be found online is outdated or aimed as worst-case scenario/spectacular stories. Instead, you'll probably find more help by speaking with a specialist support line. You're welcome to call our team of nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can. Alternatively, you might want to get in touch with the Jo's Trust helpline.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your procedure and the results will bring some reassuring news.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • I just had same problem and repeated my smear through private it came back severe cin3 with clear cervix. I was recommended loop procedure as well. No date booked and no more details. I am a nervous wreck. Like you I have mental instability because I have been through a lot recently and it is neverending. I battle this on my own . From what I read and heard from other ladies, once you have this procedure it should clear the cells so they don't turn to cancer. The whole procedure is to prevent cancer, not find it. I read all sorts myself and my head is the size of a balloon. I was not told what the care is after if I can have a baby or anything.  I will ring this phone line and speak to someone competent.

  • Hi

Sorry to read that you are so worried, I just want to give you a little reassurance, I was diagnosed with severe cin3 when I was in my late 20's, I had the leep procedure and had quite a big area of cervix removed.  once it all healed, i had another smear 3 months later and no abnormalities were found.  I am now 55 years old, have had regular smears and never had any problems.  So yes, the procedure does work.  I cannot answer the question regarding children, as I never had any.

    Good luck

    Annie

  • God bless ! Thank you for the kind words. The first nurse who has been dealing with my smears for the past 18 months has been rough, unpleasant and unsimpathetic. She even got her hands on my private results and been trying to persuade me in having my procedure with her which I find uncomfortable. I have decided to go privately if I have to. Thank you for your kind words.
