Further uncertainty after breast clinic appointment

Hi all. I’ve been looking over this forum for the last 8 months due to a scare in January and have found myself back again.

I found a lump in 6 weeks ago. Saw GP 2 weeks ago and put on 2ww referral. Saw consultant today who felt ‘abnormality’. Had an ultrasound as I’m just over a week until I’m 40. The doctor found 2 areas of concern and suspicious areas. Was sent for mammogram. Back into ultrasound and then core biopsies. Saw consultant again after that. He said there was 2 areas of concern and they need to have a look under the microscope to see if benign or malignant. After reading lots of posts on here, I was given the impression that if they did suspect cancer then the doctors would say before receiving the results but I asked them, if they thought a patient had cancer would they tell them before the results and I was told no they wouldn’t. He did say we need to get the results and take it from there.

I couldn’t help but feel his manner had changed from very matter of fact when I first arrived at the clinic to showing empathy at the meeting before I left. Am I reading into things too much?

has anyone had a similar experience and it’s turned out to be malignant and viva versa, also benign?

I will receive a call on Thursday next week (the day before my 40th birthday) with the results. If it is malignant would it be likely to be in touch with me earlier?

Sorry for the multiple questions. Heads spinning.

thanks xx

  • I hope the nurse did make it early Gooner and you got to get out xx

  • I was lucky , I used to be a district nurse so taking care of my own drain ( last one of 4 out Tues) ! Doing my own dressings and blood thinning injections . Out for a walk every day but still quite tired . Also managing to wash my hair and have a shower if sorts . X

  • Oh that’s handy!! My drain was taken out yesterday which was a relief, but my wound has been painful since then and I really struggled to sleep. Do you know if this is normal at this stage? Does the pain get worse before it gets better? If it wasn’t the weekend I’d call my horse and ask xx

  • Hi , it’s bound to be a bit sore . Are you taking regular painkillers? They put me on Codeine and Paracetamol , but now I’m just taking Paracetamol and Ibuprofen x

  • Hi GoonerGirl,

I'm so sorry to hear that it was another bad night. Removing the drain has probably irritated some of the surrounding tissues, so they probably just need time to settle down again. I would expect that this is normal, but if the pain gets any worse ask the professionals. This would happen at the weekend. If it continues, you could always phone your hospital ward for advice and your "horse" should be back on Monday - poor nurse!

I'm sure that you've read about the roller coaster of cancer - up one minute and down the next - it sounds as if you are on that ride.

    Thinking of you.

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi LCR,

I hadn’t taken any of the codeine they gave me, but I took one today and I think I will again before bed tonight. I’d stuck to ibuprofen and paracetamol until now xx

  • Thank you Jolamine,

I decided to go back to bed today and rest, after a bad night. I took some codeine to help with the pain- I think it is the drain site that’s causing most of it. I don’t feel unwell or have a high temperature so I don’t have any reason to think there is any infection.
I’ll call the nurse (or horse) on Monday if I need to- usually I spot an autocorrect on my phone, but that was one that caught me out!!

    Thank you as always xx
