I think my mum has cancer

My mum is elderly and has been feeling really sick over the past few months and very dizzy. Doctors have done blood tests and trying to get to the bottom of it but recently me and my sister are really concerned.

she looks extremely emaciated. She also has issues with her bowels

We feel she needs more thorough investigations with scans but can we insist she has these? She has capacity to make her own decisions but she just goes by the GP and I don’t have much confidence in them. Me and my sister think she has cancer.

Im going to contact the GP on Monday and express my thoughts but can I insist she is investigated further without frightening her or worrying her? Is there anything else we can do pease we are extremely worried and desperate for help . Thank you

  • Hi Strawberryshortcake,

I think that you need to be honest with your mum and tell her that you are worried about her, and if possible could you or your sister go to doctors appointments with her, so that you can ask the doctor questions yourselves?

If your mum is anything like mine was, she may downplay her symptoms to you and her doctor.  Hopefully she has already had a stool sample or fit test taken, to check for blood in her stools, if not, push for that to be done.

Ideally if your mum agrees, you will need to get your mums permission in writing for you to speak to the doctor and know her medical details.  I typed this up for my mum and got her to sign it, it then gets held by the gp. unfortunately, without this in place, the doctor is unlikely to be able to talk to you in depth about your mum's tests.

My mum and dad were actually relieved when I started going in to see the doctor with my mum (you can step outside to give privacy if they want to examine her), mum could never remember exactly what the doctor said, which then left me wondering what was going on.  I was able to keep on at them for further tests, which I am not sure that my mum would have. She never wanted to make a fuss, bless her!

I hope that you and the doctors soon get to the bottom of what is wrong with your mum, and that she can have treatment to make her better.

    Best wishes

    Annie

  • Hi yes its a very difficult situation but I think in times like this its best to intervene ,if you did nothing you might forever regret it and blame yourselves ,you're doing this out of love and concern I would definitely try to persuade her to allow you to speak to the GP and see where you go from there .
