Swollen lymph node in armpit

Hi all,

I was seen in breast cancer clinic under 2WW yesterday and before I was sent for Ultrasound a doctor assessed me.

my history was intermittent pain felt deep within area of breast tissue on my right breast and that due to having very lumpy breast tissue it is hard for me to detect lumps.

when examined the doctor had mentioned that they had felt a swollen lymph node in my armpit which was size of 1cm.

I was shocked and this caused more worry to my already anxious state and wondered why I have not been able to feel This myself.

anyway, in I go for ultrasound.

the ultrasound sonographer said no evidence of breast cancer in Left breast and that everything appeared normal.

I then mentioned about my lymph node and that the doctor found prior to my scan, the sonographer said “ that bloody doctor always finds a lymph node”

sonographer said my lymph node appeared normal size and sent me on my way!

even though no cancer found in breast, would you still worry that the doctor found lymph node or would you be more reassured by sonographer saying all normal?

surely if lymph appeared abnormal they would of done further investigation that day on me ? Wouldn’t they?

so worries still

  • Hi there,

I don’t have this exact experience but I do having something similar, when I went to the GP about a lump in my breast she estimated the lump was 4cm, when I went to clinic yesterday and had an ultrasound they found it was only 1.7cm so quite a bit different to what the doctor said. GPs aren’t experts when it comes to breast health so I wouldn’t be too concerned.  Ultrasounds will always be more reliable than a doctor simply feeling things, a doctor can estimate things but an ultrasound gives you a definite answer. So if the sonographer told you everything looked good then I would trust them more than I would the GP but that’s just me personally, if your still worried you can go back to the GP and ask for another appointment for clinic.

But as I said the GP estimated my lump to be 2.3cm bigger than it actually was so I hope this helps xx

  • Thankyou for responding,

I am somewhat reassured but just have these little niggles of doubts sometimes.

sorry to hear you have found a lump

    are you having further investigations?

do you think that even though ultrasound found no breast cancer, would they of investigated further do you think if my lymph node was large?

so scared something has been missed

    x

  • Yeah that’s natural I’m the exact same and no, my lump turned out to be a fibroadenoma which is benign so no further action is required they normally disappear on there own.

I think that if cancer was present in the lymph nodes there would also be traces of it within the breast. Lymph node changes could also be due to other things such illness and I think that in conditions such as fibrocystic breasts these can cause changes and pain in the lymph nodes.

Obviously I’m not a professional I can only give advice based on my experience but if your still worried you could contact your GP and ask for it to be investigated further x
