Chances and best way of chasing a referral

Hello

After a pretty bad year of sudden back pains and extreme weight loss, my husband was finally seen by the GP mid-September and got a huge value on his PSA (3900+, as well as anaemia and other abnormal results). The chest X-ray showed also some bone shadowing, so the situation is not particularly good. GP notes mention strong suspicion of metastatic prostate cancer. At the beginning I thought it was wild to reach that conclusion from just those tests, but having now seen the contents on this site I can see why. We were attributing his pains and weight loss to old age and lack of appetite, and even though it looks unlikely, I'm still hoping that's the case.

We were referred to the urology department on the 29th September under the 2 week appointment plan and were given a first appointment with the urologist on the 2nd November.

I called yesterday morning to the same hospital urology department checking if there were any cancellations earlier than that, but they were only able to move it to the 1st November. To top it off, after the change I cannot access the referral anymore using the nhs site, which is a worry in itself (I'm unsure if those referrals appear in the NHS app, but I can't find it).

We are happy to attend any hospital within Hampshire or West Sussex with a short notice. Is it worth trying to find out if I can call some sort of number where they can check appointments for more hospitals? And if so, would it be advisable to call every day? I'm really appreciative to the health service and I don't want to be a pain for them, but given the recent news we are going through quite an stressful situation.

Any advice is more than welcome.

Thanks

  • Hi Bernardo,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of your situation, and I can understand you wanting to get the appointment sooner. I'm not too sure how many options you have in terms of hospitals - it may be that you need to be within the same NHS Trust.

You may find it helpful to speak to one of our nurses about this as they may be better placed to advise. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

I hope you're able to find out more and that you're able to get the appointment soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
