Referral to see general surgeon after mammogram

Hi all first time poster I hope this is ok to post here. Im 43 and A few weeks ago I was referred for a mammogram after finding a lump in my breast. The doctor seemed pretty certain it is a cyst as it feels oval and moves around (left breast) I really wasn’t too worried about it until now. I had a mammogram just over a week ago I have now received an appointment to be seen under general surgery speciality as an outpatient and it’s got me really anxious. It’s not the first lump I’ve had the first one 2 years ago (same breast) was a small cyst that in time went away on its own. The recent lump is much bigger feels like 1” at least but still feels cyst like so I thought. I guess I was expecting to receive an appointment for ultrasound and results as this is what happened first time. This letter suggesting being seen under general surgery has me in a right panic I’m such an anxious person and the appointment is not for almost 2 weeks. I don’t know if I’m just over thinking but is it likely they want to do further tests like a biopsy or even discuss surgery if I’m seeing a surgeon or is this completely normal to get a letter like this just for the results of my mammogram. It’s got me so nervous any advice is really appreciated. Thank you

  • Hello

maybe it’s just for further testing maybe a biopsy and ultrasound , maybe the mamo wasn’t clear , try not to worry I wish you good luck xx love Lara

  • thank you for replying Lara I can’t help but wonder why else I’d need to see a surgeon if it’s just to get my results. I think your right maybe a biopsy or perhaps even a cyst that they want to talk about removing. I just wish there was a little more clarity in the letter it will send me bonkers over thinking it Thank you for your well wishes xx

yes they have a way in confusing us , but if you look on the letter for consultants name you can call the secretary and ask for the breast nurse number to ask why you have the appointment and what’s the details of the appointment x

  • Hi there,

We can jump to all sorts of conclusions with letters and timescales  so try not to worry. Speak to the consultants secretary or one of the breast clinic nurses as Lara suggests who will be able to advise what they plan to do.  Remember if you have to have a biopsy this doesn’t mean you have cancer.  A biopsy is done to rule out cancer as much as to confirm it.  Good luck

  • Thank you both xx I will try giving a call today hopefully they can give me a little clarity on what to expect at the appointment.
