General surgery specialty appointment

Having been referred for a mammogram after finding a lump in my breast I have now received an appointment to be seen under general surgery speciality. It’s not the first lump I’ve had the first 2 years ago was a small cyst that in time went away on its own. The recent lump is cyst like feeling also but much bigger. I was expecting to receive an appointment for ultrasound as this is what happened first time. This letter suggesting general surgery has me in a panic though and the appointment is not for almost 2 weeks. I don’t know if I’m just over thinking but is it likely they want to do further tests like a biopsy if I’m seeing a surgeon or is this completely normal to get a letter like this just for the results of my mammogram. It’s got me so nervous

  • Hi Ameli123,

I can understand your concerns and questions, especially if it's different to what happened last time. It's difficult to advise on what the next steps may be, the only thing I can suggest would be to try to speak to your doctor if you have queries about the referral and what to expect. You are also welcome to give our nurses a call if you would like to - you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

Otherwise, try to keep busy and focus on other things where you can, while you wait.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
